Chapter 4 - The Hospital Ambush

Rain splashed against the neon signs of the Independencia medical district. Elena rushed through the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridors of the public hospital, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Grandma! Grandma!" she sobbed as she reached room 304.
Carmen Salgado lay pale against the white sheets, an oxygen mask strapped to her face, monitors beeping erratically.
"Elena..." Carmen gasped weakly, reaching out a fragile, swollen hand. "They... they took the black box..."
"Who took it, Grandma? Who?" Elena pleaded, clutching her grandmother's hand.
"The... the woman with the scar on her wrist..." Carmen wheezed. "She said... the past must stay buried... She said you knew too much about the Cárdenas baby..."
Before Carmen could say another word, the glass window of the room shattered.
Two tall men wearing heavy raincoats and tactical masks kicked the door open. One of them raised a suppressed pistol directly at Elena.
"Elena Salgado," the lead gunman said coldly. "You should have stayed a quiet maid."
Elena threw herself over her grandmother's body, closing her eyes and preparing for the end.
BANG! BANG!
The heavy wooden door frame splintered as three bodyguards in dark suits burst into the room. Behind them came Rodrigo Cárdenas, his face twisted in pure rage. He tackled the lead gunman into the glass partition, shattering it into a thousand glittering pieces.
"Touch her and you die!" Rodrigo roared, driving a brutal right hook into the attacker's jaw.
Mateo and the security team disarmed the second gunman, pinning him hard against the tile floor.
Rodrigo turned, breathing heavily, his hands covered in minor cuts from the glass. He locked eyes with Elena, who was huddled on the bed, trembling and gasping for air.
He stepped over the unconscious attacker, walked up to her, and pulled her off the bed into his arms. He held her tightly against his chest, his heart pounding against hers.
"I’ve got you," Rodrigo whispered, his voice shaking with emotions he hadn't felt in years. "You’re safe now. I promise you."

Elena held onto his jacket, weeping silently into his shoulder. But as she looked over his arm at the captured gunman, she saw a silver wrist cuff peeking out from under the man's sleeve—engraved with the corporate logo of Cárdenas Enterprises.
The call was coming from inside his own empire.
