Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Bond

A silence deeper than death descended upon the room.
Rodrigo turned slowly to face Elena. "What is she talking about?"
Elena felt the room spinning. Tears spilled over her eyelashes as she shook her head frantically.
"I... I didn't know, Rodrigo! I swear to God I didn't know!" Elena sobbed, her voice breaking. "Three years ago, my grandmother brought a little girl home to our apartment in Independencia. She told me the child was abandoned by a young girl in our village who died in childbirth. She had no papers, no name... only a silver pendant around her neck."
Elena reached inside her collar and pulled out a delicate gold chain. Suspended from it was a small, heart-shaped locket with the initials I.C. engraved on the back.
Rodrigo’s hand shook uncontrollably as he reached out and touched the locket. It was the exact gift he had given his daughter on the day she was born.
"Mia..." Rodrigo whispered, his voice cracking with immense pain. "My little Mia..."
"We named her Sofia," Elena cried, holding her hands over her face. "After the angel we prayed to every night! I quit nursing school to afford her asthma medicine! I worked three jobs to buy her clothes! I took this housekeeping job at your house so I could pay for her heart surgery next month!"
Valeria laughed triumphantly. "She was hiding your daughter right under your nose, Rodrigo! She took your blood and bone and raised her in a slum!"
"Because YOU dropped her there!" Carmen’s weak yet commandingly sharp voice echoed from the doorway.
Supported by two nurses and an IV drip, Elena’s grandmother stepped into the room. Her old eyes burned with ferocious truth.
"Three years ago, a man paid me ten thousand dollars to take a baby and never ask questions," Carmen revealed, staring down Valeria. "He said the baby was born out of wedlock to a wealthy family who wanted her dead. I took the child to save her life! I gave her to Elena because Elena has the heart of a saint! We didn't steal your child, Mr. Cárdenas—we saved her from her!"
Carmen pointed her cane directly at Valeria’s chest.

Valeria’s face contorted in rage. Realizing she was cornered, she suddenly reached into her coat, pulling out a small black detonator.
"Nobody leaves this room!" Valeria screamed, her eyes wide with madness.
