Chapter 2 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

Hook: A beautiful prison is still a prison, and the guards are wearing suits.

By nightfall, Clara was no longer living in her cramped apartment in Brooklyn. She had been moved under heavy guard to the Rossi estate—a fortress of stone and wrought iron hidden deep in the hills of Westchester.

Her belongings had been packed and moved for her. Her phone was gone, replaced by a secure device that could only dial three numbers: Damian, Dr. Bianchi, and the house kitchen.

Damian walked into the master bedroom late that night. The scent of rain and expensive bourbon followed him. Clara was sitting by the window, staring out at the heavily patrolled gardens.

"You need to eat," Damian said, signaling a maid who brought in a tray of steak, vegetables, and soup.

"I'm not hungry," Clara said coldly, not looking at him.

Damian walked over, dismissing the maid with a wave of his hand. He sat on the edge of the bed, observing her. "Dr. Bianchi reviewed your clinic files. You are nine weeks pregnant. You are under-eating, and your stress levels are dangerous for the baby."

"Then let me go!" Clara snapped, turning to face him, tears of frustration burning her eyes. "If you care about this baby, let me leave this nightmare! Your father was murdered in his own driveway, Damian! Do you want that for our child?"

Damian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked. He stood up, towering over her. "My father was weak at the end. I am not. This child will be the safest individual in this city because I will burn anyone who looks at them wrong."

He walked closer, his presence overwhelming. He reached out, his large hand hovering over her stomach before gently pressing against the fabric of her sweater. Clara froze, her breath hitching. For all his cruelty, his touch was surprisingly warm, almost reverent.

"You are my wife now, Clara," he murmured.

Clara gasped. "What? No. I am your secretary."

"The paperwork is being filed tomorrow. A quiet, civil ceremony here at the estate," Damian said, his voice leaving no room for argument. "The family needs stability. My men need to see that the succession is secure. And the world needs to know that touching you means absolute death."

"This is a forced marriage," she whispered in horror. "You don't love me, Damian. You just want control."

Damian leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear, sending a terrifying shiver down her spine. "Love is a liability in my line of work, Clara. But possession? Possession is absolute. You belong to me. The child belongs to me. Accept your new reality."

He turned and walked toward the door, pausing before he left. "Tomorrow, the designer arrives to fit your wedding dress. Don't fight them. It will only make things harder for you."

As the door locked from the outside, Clara collapsed onto the bed, sobbing into the pillows. She realized with crushing certainty that she wasn't just a captive of the Rossi family anymore—she was the prize at the center of a looming war.
