Chapter 5 - THE COLD REALITY

Hook: Power doesn't change you—it just strips away the illusion of who you thought you were.
Thomas Vance fell to the floor, dead before he hit the ground.
The remaining Vance loyalists were executed on the spot by Damian’s newly bought enforcers. Clara’s mother was freed, terrified and unable to look at her daughter, who stood frozen with a smoking gun in her hand.
"Get her mother on a private plane to a secure location in Europe," Damian ordered his men. "She is never to return to the United States. For her own protection."
Clara didn't protest. She allowed herself to be led back to the limousine. The transformation was complete. She wasn't the innocent secretary anymore. She had taken a life to protect her family.
As the months rolled on, the Rossi family absorbed the Vance territory, becoming the undisputed rulers of the city’s underworld. Damian’s power was absolute, and Clara was treated with a reverence bordering on religious awe by the capos. They no longer saw her as a liability; they saw her as a cold, calculating partner to the boss.
But inside the grand estate, the distance between Damian and Clara grew into a canyon.
Clara was eight months pregnant now. She spent her days in the nursery, which had been decorated in soft blues and creams—a stark contrast to the dark, blood-stained world outside its doors.
Damian walked into the nursery one evening, watching her assemble a crib. He looked at her with a strange intensity.
"You haven't spoken more than ten words to me since the docks," he said quietly.
"There's nothing to say, Damian," Clara replied, her voice devoid of emotion. "You got what you wanted. I am your wife. The Vance family is gone. Your empire is secure. My mother is safe but hates me. Are you satisfied?"
Damian walked over, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her against his chest. His eyes burned with a desperate fire. "I did what I had to do to keep you alive! Do you think I enjoyed watching you pull that trigger? I wanted to keep you clean, Clara! But this world doesn't allow for innocence!"
"You didn't want to keep me clean," she whispered, looking up at him with cold defiance. "You wanted to drag me down into the mud with you so I could never leave. You wanted to make sure I was just as monstrous as you are, so I wouldn't look at you with disgust anymore."
Damian flinched as if struck. His grip loosened. For the first time, Clara saw vulnerability in the mafia boss. He truly, in his own twisted, broken way, had fallen in love with her. But it was a love born in violence, nurtured by fear, and sealed in blood.
"The baby will be here in a month," Damian said, masking his pain with a cold exterior. "The doctors say it's a boy. He will be named after my father."
May you like
"He will be named whatever I choose," Clara shot back. "You may control my life, Damian, but you do not control my mind."
Damian smiled a dark, tragic smile. "We shall see, my queen."
