Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF ALLIANCES

Hook: To defeat an enemy, the monster had to become a demon—and Clara was forced to watch.
The aftermath of the chapel attack left the Rossi family paralyzed. Damian’s inner circle was compromised, and the Vance family was closing in on their operations.
For the next two months, Clara was kept under maximum security in the inner sanctum of the estate. Her pregnancy was progressing; at five months, her bump was clearly visible. Damian had changed. The attack had triggered a hyper-possessive, ruthless streak in him. He rarely left the estate, managing the war from his home office, but when he did leave, he returned smelling of copper and cold rain.
One evening, Damian entered her room holding a file. He looked hollow, the dark circles under his eyes deeper than ever.
"The Vance family has kidnapped your mother," he said without preamble.
Clara felt the air leave her lungs. She stood up so fast her chair tipped over. "What? No... my mother is in Ohio! She has nothing to do with this!"
"They tracked her down through your old employee tax records," Damian said, his voice tightly controlled. "They want a trade. The harbor shipping routes for her life."
"Give it to them!" Clara screamed, grabbing his lapels. "Give them the damn routes, Damian! She’s an innocent woman!"
"If I give them the routes, the Rossi family loses all leverage. We will be hunted down and slaughtered within a week. My men will mutiny," Damian replied coldly. "I cannot give up the empire, Clara. It is what protects you and our child."
"Your empire is a curse!" she sobbed, hitting his chest. "You care more about your power than human lives!"
Damian caught her wrists, his grip unbreakable but careful not to hurt her. "Listen to me," he growled. "I am going to get your mother back. But we are going to play by my rules. I need you to be strong. Can you do that for our child?"
Clara looked into his eyes and saw a terrifying certainty. She nodded slowly, her tears drying into a cold, hard anger. "What do you need me to do?"
The next night, a meeting was set at an abandoned warehouse by the docks—the very place where the Rossi empire had been born. Damian arrived with only four men, bringing Clara with him. The Vance boss, a brutal older man named Thomas Vance, stood waiting with ten armed guards. Bound and gagged in a chair in the center of the room was Clara’s mother, trembling and bruised.
"Ah, the happy couple," Thomas Vance mocked, looking at Clara’s pregnant form. "And the next generation of Rossi scum. Do you have the deeds to the harbor routes, Damian?"
Damian stepped forward, holding a silver briefcase. "Right here. Release the woman first."
"I don't think so," Thomas laughed. "Drop the case, and maybe I won't have my men shoot your pregnant whore right in front of you."
Clara felt a surge of adrenaline. She looked at Damian, who gave her a microscopic nod.
Instead of dropping the case, Damian opened it. It wasn't deeds inside. It was a military-grade remote detonator.
"You think I came here to negotiate, Thomas?" Damian said, his voice echoing like death itself. "I’ve spent the last 48 hours buying out your own men. Look around you."
Before Thomas could react, four of his own guards turned their weapons on him. The Vance boss froze, his face losing all color.
"You... you turned my own security?" Thomas whispered.
"Everyone has a price, Thomas. And yours was too low," Damian said. He walked over, picked up a gun from one of the turned guards, and handed it to Clara.
The room went dead silent.
"Damian, no..." Clara whispered, looking at the heavy weapon in her hand.
"He threatened our child, Clara. He put your mother in danger," Damian said, his voice a hypnotic, dark whisper in her ear. "The only way to ensure your mother’s safety, and the safety of our baby, is to eliminate the threat entirely. Finish it."
The drama in the room reached a fever pitch. Clara’s mother was crying through her gag. Thomas Vance was begging for his life. Damian stood behind Clara, his hands over hers, guiding her aim right at Thomas’s chest.
"Show them who you are, Clara Rossi," Damian whispered. "Show them you are the queen of this family."

Clara’s finger trembled on the trigger. She looked at the pathetic, begging man before her. Then she remembered the chapel explosion, the blood on her wedding dress, and the threat to her unborn child.
BANG.
