Chapter 1 - The Secret Carving

The heavy mahogany doors of Saint Jude’s Cathedral swung shut with a muffled thud, sealing out the icy November wind, but the chill inside the marble hall remained absolute.
Every head in the elite congregation had turned. Wealthy socialites clad in mink coats, high-stakes corporate investors, and political titan power brokers stared down at the small boy standing in the central aisle. His oversized, threadbare jacket was caked in dried mud, his socks torn at the heels, and his small, shivering frame stood in stark contrast to the polished brass and white roses surrounding the casket of Arthur Sterling—the titan of Sterling Global Logistics.
Victoria Sterling, draped in thousands of dollars of tailor-made black silk, clutched her diamond-encrusted rosary. Her face was a frozen mask of aristocracy betrayed.
"Call security," she hissed to the suit-clad men beside her. "Throw this filthy imp out before I have the chief of police clear this entire room."
"Wait."
The funeral director, a tall man named Marcus with silver hair and decades of solemn professionalism, knelt on the marble floor. He didn't look at the boy's dirty shoes or his tear-streaked face. His eyes were fixed on the rough-hewn wooden toy car lying beside his shoe.
Marcus picked up the heavy piece of oak. It had been carved by hand, polished not with lacquer, but with beeswax. When Marcus flipped the car over to inspect the base, his fingers trembled violently.
Carved deep into the wood were three initials: A.S.
And beneath them, a date: OCTOBER 14, 2017.
Nine years ago to the exact day.
"Where did you get this?" Marcus asked, his voice cracking, shedding every layer of his professional composure. "Tell me, child. Who gave this to you?"
The boy wiped his nose on his sleeve. "My father made it for me before he died. But the man in the box..." He pointed a trembling, pale finger at Arthur Sterling’s coffin. "...he visited me every Sunday at the shelter. He tuned the wheels. He told me that when the clock struck twelve on his final day, I had to bring this car to him."
Gasps rippled through the pews like a wave through dry leaves. Victoria stepped forward, her heels clicking like gunshots against the stone.
"Lies! Cheap, extortionist lies!" Victoria snarled, snatching the veil off her head. "Arthur had one son! Julian! My son! He had no illegitimate gutter-rats! Marcus, give me that ridiculous piece of trash!"
Victoria lunged to grab the toy, but Marcus pulled it back, holding it under the ambient chandelier light.
"Victoria, look closer," Marcus whispered, his eyes wide with terror. "Look at the second set of marks."

Behind the initials A.S. were two tiny interlocking rings carved with surgical precision—the hidden crest of the Sterling family's founding lineage, a mark only Arthur and his personal artisan knew.
And then, the heavy cathedral doors burst open once more.
