Chapter 2 - The Clause in the Coffers

A man in a sharp charcoal suit marched down the aisle, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. It was Harrison Vance, Arthur Sterling’s personal legal council for thirty years—the only man who knew where all of Arthur’s secrets were buried.
"What is the meaning of this interruption, Harrison?" Victoria demanded, her voice tight with panic. "Control this circus! Get this orphan out of my husband's service!"
Harrison didn't look at Victoria. He walked straight to the small boy, knelt on one knee, and offered his hand.
"You must be Leo," Harrison said softly.
The boy nodded once, clutching the wooden car Marcus handed back to him.
"This is an outrage!" shouted Julian Sterling, Victoria’s twenty-four-year-old biological son, stepping down from the family pew. "The funeral is over! Read the obituary and let us bury my father!"
"I’m afraid the funeral cannot proceed," Harrison announced calmly. His voice echoed clearly across the cathedral, picked up by the news microphones waiting near the rear entrance. "Arthur Sterling updated his last will and testament forty-eight hours before his sudden heart attack."
The silence in the church was deafening.
Harrison snapped open his briefcase and pulled out a gold-sealed envelope. "Mr. Sterling left specific instructions. Should a child present a hand-carved wooden toy bearing the date of October 14, 2017, at his funeral, all asset distributions, probate proceedings, and corporate ownership transfers of Sterling Global are instantly frozen."
Victoria turned pale. "You're insane! I am his wife! Julian is his sole heir!"
"Not anymore," Harrison replied coldly. "According to Clause 9 of the new will, ninety percent of the Sterling estate—valued at $540 million—is placed into a blind trust. The trust has only one beneficiary."

Harrison pointed to the eight-year-old boy in the dirty jacket.
"And the sole trustee appointed to manage the boy's life and fortune until he turns twenty-one..." Harrison turned his gaze directly onto Victoria, "...is not you, Mrs. Sterling. It is Mr. Marcus Vance, the funeral director standing right beside him."
