Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Clock

Without a word, Victoria scrambled across the hall toward Arthur's private study, her silk dress rustling aggressively. Leo followed her slowly, his quiet footsteps barely making a sound behind her.

Inside the dark, oak-paneled study sat a massive grandfather clock from the 18th century—a heirloom that had stopped ticking precisely three years ago.

Victoria grabbed the brass key from Leo's hand and shoved it into a tiny, almost invisible keyhole on the side of the clock's wooden casing. She turned it.

Click.

The heavy front glass door swung open. Inside, behind the frozen golden pendulum, was not a clock mechanism, but a small digital vault. Beside it lay a physical cassette tape labeled: "TO MY KILLER."

Victoria stumbled back, pressing her hand over her mouth.

"He knew," she whispered to herself, tears of panic finally breaking through her cold facade. "He knew..."

"He knew what?" a voice called from the doorway.

Julian stood there, holding a golf club, his eyes wild with greed and panic. "Mother, what is going on?! The news reporters are outside our gates! Who is this brat? Why did Dad leave everything to him?!"

"Julian... be quiet!" Victoria hissed.

"No!" Julian yelled, marching into the room and grabbing Leo by the collar of his jacket, lifting the boy off his feet. "Listen to me, you little leech! You're going to tell the press tomorrow that this was a prank! Or I swear to God—"

"Put him down, Julian," a stern voice barked.

Harrison Vance stepped into the study accompanied by two uniformed police officers. "Any intimidation of the minor heir will result in your immediate arrest, Mr. Sterling."

Julian threw Leo onto the carpet. "He's not an heir! Run the DNA test right now! He's a nobody!"

"The DNA results arrived an hour ago from the state lab," Harrison said quietly, pulling a sealed document from his coat. "And the results are absolute."

Victoria held her breath. "Is he Arthur's son?"

Harrison looked at Victoria with a look of terrifying pity. "No, Victoria. He is not Arthur's son."

Victoria gasped in relief, a malicious smile beginning to form on her lips. "I knew it! Arrest him! Arrest them all!"

"He is not Arthur's son," Harrison repeated firmly, "because he is YOUR son."
