Chapter 8 - The Twisted Truth

Late that evening, rain poured heavily over the cemetery.

The crowd was gone. The media vans had cleared out. The tombstone of Arthur Sterling stood cold and fresh against the dark mud.

A black limousine pulled up to the gates. The door opened, and little Leo stepped out. He wore a crisp, expensive custom suit now, black leather shoes replacing his torn sneakers.

He walked slowly toward Arthur's grave, holding his wooden toy car.

Beside the grave stood Marcus, the funeral director, holding a black umbrella over his head.

"It went exactly as planned, didn't it?" Marcus said quietly, his solemn tone completely gone, replaced by a cold, sharp demeanor.

Leo stopped at the base of the headstone. The child wiped the rain from his eyes, but he wasn't crying. A slow, chilling smile spread across his young face.

"She fell for every piece of it," Leo whispered, his voice completely devoid of the innocent, timid tone he had used in court.

Marcus chuckled softly. "Arthur thought he was so clever, hiding you in that shelter. He thought he was playing checkmate against Victoria."

Leo knelt down and placed the wooden car on top of Arthur's headstone.

"Arthur didn't adopt me out of love," Leo said, looking at the carved date October 14, 2017. "He adopted me to use me as a shield against Victoria. He was just as cruel as she was."

"And the poison?" Marcus asked, leaning down. "Did Victoria really give him the lethal dose?"

Leo looked up at Marcus, his dark eyes glinting under the umbrella.

"Victoria only gave him small doses," Leo whispered with an eerie calm. "Not enough to kill him. Just enough to make him sick."

Marcus grinned. "And who put the final dose in his tea the night before he died?"

Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny glass dropper—empty.

"He came to visit me at the shelter one last time," Leo said quietly. "He brought me sweet tea. When he looked away to adjust his watch... I put it in his glass. Just like you taught me, Uncle Marcus."

Marcus patted the boy softly on the shoulder.

Marcus wasn't just a funeral director. He was the former business partner whom Victoria had an affair with years ago—the real biological father of both Julian and Leo, written out of the Sterling fortune decades prior. Together with his long-lost son, they had manipulated Arthur’s paranoia, nudged Victoria into a trap, and framed her for a murder that Leo had executed.

The boy stood up, smoothed down his $5,000 tailored coat, and looked at the grave one last time.

"Rest in peace, Mr. Sterling," Leo whispered with a cold laugh. "Thanks for the toy."
