CHAPTER 1 — The House That Became a Prison

The sound that echoed through the mansion wasn't the breaking of crystal.
It was the sound of childhood disappearing.
At exactly 2:17 p.m., beneath the blistering July sun of Zapopan, Jalisco, eight-year-old Valentina Álvarez stood frozen in the center of the luxurious kitchen, staring at the shattered crystal pitcher scattered across the white marble floor.
Dark red hibiscus tea spread across the tiles like fresh blood.
For a few terrifying seconds, she couldn't breathe.
Not because of the broken glass.
Because she already knew what would happen next.
Behind her, ten-month-old Santiago sat in his highchair, startled by the crash. His tiny lips trembled before a heartbreaking cry escaped his chest.
The baby didn't understand accidents.
But Valentina did.
Accidents had consequences in this house.
Ever since their mother, Elena, died of a sudden heart condition nearly eighteen months earlier, every mistake carried a punishment.
Not from their father.
Never from him.
From Paulina.
The woman everyone admired.
The woman magazines called "The Elegant Philanthropist of Jalisco."
The woman who smiled for photographers while secretly turning two innocent children into prisoners inside their own home.
Valentina immediately dropped to her knees.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."
She whispered the words to no one.
Or maybe to herself.
Tiny trembling fingers reached for the sharp crystal pieces scattered across the floor.
She had to clean everything before Paulina arrived.
Maybe...
Just maybe...
If there wasn't any evidence...
Nothing bad would happen.
But fear makes children forget pain.
The largest shard sliced deep across her right palm.
Blood instantly spilled onto the white marble.
The little girl bit her lip so hard it nearly bled.
She refused to cry.
Crying made Paulina angrier.
Instead, she grabbed a kitchen towel and wrapped it around her bleeding hand while desperately wiping away the red tea with the other.
Her heartbeat thundered inside her ears.
Too late.
Click.
Click.
Click.
The unmistakable sound of designer heels echoed through the hallway.
Every step sounded closer.
Slower.
More terrifying.
Valentina stopped breathing.
The kitchen doorway darkened.
Paulina stood there wearing an immaculate cream-colored designer dress, oversized sunglasses resting on her perfectly styled blonde hair.
Anyone looking at her would have thought she had just stepped out of a luxury fashion advertisement.
Until they looked into her eyes.
There was no warmth there.
Only irritation.
Disgust.
And something even darker.
Her gaze immediately fell upon the broken pitcher.
Then the blood.
Then the crying baby.
"What..."
She spoke so quietly that it frightened Valentina even more.
"...did you do?"
"I—I didn't mean to..."
CRACK!
Before the little girl could finish speaking, Paulina slapped her so hard across the face that she crashed against one of the kitchen cabinets.
The impact rattled every plate inside.
Valentina collapsed onto the floor.
Her cheek burned.
Her ears rang.
But the slap wasn't what hurt most.
It was hearing Santiago cry even louder after watching his sister fall.
The baby stretched his tiny arms toward her.
He wanted Valentina.
He always wanted Valentina.
Not Paulina.
Never Paulina.
Paulina's face twisted with hatred.
"Even he prefers you."
She grabbed Valentina violently by the wrist—the same wrist with the deep cut.
The little girl screamed.
The wound reopened instantly.
Blood dripped across the marble.
Paulina didn't care.
"You think you're the mother now?"
"No..."
"You think this is your house?"
"No..."
"You think your father will choose you over me?"
Valentina lowered her head.
She already knew the correct answer.
"I don't know..."
Paulina smiled.
It wasn't the smile of a human being.
It was the smile of someone who enjoyed fear.
She walked over to Santiago's highchair, unbuckled him carelessly, and shoved the frightened baby into Valentina's arms.
"Fine."
"If you love taking care of him so much..."
"You can both stay together."
The little girl hugged Santiago tightly.
His tiny heartbeat raced against hers.
She whispered into his ear exactly what their mother used to whisper whenever storms frightened them.
"It's okay."
"I'm here."
Those three words almost made Paulina furious.
Without warning, she grabbed both children and dragged them toward the back hallway.
Valentina stumbled barefoot over the marble floor.
Her injured hand left small bloody fingerprints against the walls as she tried to keep Santiago from falling.
Every servant inside the mansion saw them.
Every single one.
The gardener lowered his eyes.
The cook turned away.
The housekeeper silently wiped away tears.
No one moved.
No one dared.
Because everyone knew one thing.
Anyone who challenged Paulina was fired before sunset.
Some disappeared forever from the Álvarez estate.
The enormous glass doors opened.
A blast of scorching heat hit them like opening an oven.
The backyard shimmered beneath the relentless Mexican sun.
Even the swimming pool looked too hot to enter.
Near the far edge of the property stood something that should never have remained in such an elegant estate.
An old rusted iron kennel.
It had once belonged to Bruno...
A Doberman that Elena had rescued years before.
After Elena died...
The dog mysteriously disappeared.
Now the kennel had a new purpose.
Paulina unlocked the rusty gate.
The metal squealed loudly.
"No..."
Valentina whispered.
"Please..."
"Not again..."
Paulina laughed.
"So you remember."
She shoved both children inside.
The floor burned beneath Valentina's bare feet.
The metal walls were so hot they couldn't even touch them.
Santiago immediately began screaming.
His tiny face turned bright red.
Sweat poured from his forehead.
Valentina desperately searched the kennel.
Nothing.
No water.
No blanket.
No shade.
Only rust.
Dust.
And unbearable heat.
She wrapped herself around the baby, trying to shield him from the blazing sunlight pouring through the metal bars.
Her own back absorbed the heat instead.
Paulina slowly locked the padlock.
Click.
The sound echoed like a prison sentence.
"If either of you makes another mess..."
She leaned close enough for only Valentina to hear.
"...next time I'll leave you here until your father comes back from his business trip."
Then she smiled.
"But don't worry."
"He won't."
"He never comes home early."
She turned around without another glance.
The mansion doors closed.
Silence returned.
Except for Santiago's desperate crying.
Minutes passed.
Then more.
The temperature climbed higher.
Valentina could feel Santiago becoming weaker.
His cries became softer.
His little body felt frighteningly hot.
She began singing the lullaby their mother had once sung every summer afternoon.
Her voice cracked.
She couldn't remember all the words.
But she remembered enough.
Enough to keep her brother calm.
Enough to stop herself from breaking.
Then...
Something happened that neither child could see.
Far beyond the enormous front gardens...
Outside the estate...
The automatic security gate unexpectedly received an authorization code.
One that hadn't been scheduled.
One that Paulina never imagined would be used today.
The steel gates slowly slid open.
A black armored SUV rolled silently onto the driveway.
Inside sat Alejandro Álvarez.
One of Mexico's youngest self-made millionaires.
He had canceled an important business meeting after experiencing a strange feeling he couldn't explain all morning.
He had ignored dozens of phone calls.
Skipped lunch.
Driven home without telling anyone.
Without knowing why.
As the SUV approached the mansion, Alejandro noticed something unusual.
There were no children playing in the gardens.
No laughter.
No toys.
No nanny.
No sign of Santiago.
No sign of Valentina.
Only an eerie silence.
He frowned.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
His heart suddenly began pounding.
He didn't know it yet.
But in less than twenty minutes...
A forgotten security camera...
Hidden above the backyard...
Would expose a horror no father could ever forgive.
May you like
And when Alejandro pressed PLAY... someone inside that mansion would lose everything.
End of Chapter 1.
