CHAPTER 5 — The Investigator's Secret File

Alejandro barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image—Valentina wrapping her small arms around Santiago, shielding him with every ounce of strength she had.

By sunrise, he had made up his mind.

He would stop guessing.

He would follow the evidence.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., Ricardo entered the office carrying a thick manila folder.

"I found the private investigator."

Alejandro looked up immediately.

"Who hired him?"

Ricardo placed the folder on the desk.

"That's the strange part."

"The contract was signed through a law firm."

Alejandro frowned.

"Which client?"

"The documents are protected by confidentiality."

Ricardo slid several photographs across the desk.

"They're all from the last three months."

Alejandro picked up the first picture.

Valentina and Santiago were playing in the garden under the supervision of a nanny.

Nothing unusual.

The second photograph showed Paulina meeting the same unidentified visitor outside an upscale café.

The third revealed Paulina entering a bank with a sealed envelope.

"What was she investigating?" Alejandro asked.

Ricardo answered quietly.

"I don't think she was the target."

Alejandro looked at him.

"I think... someone was investigating her."

The room fell silent.

Ricardo opened the folder.

Inside were copies of public records, property transactions, and corporate filings.

One document immediately caught Alejandro's attention.

A company he had never heard of had quietly purchased a small estate outside Guadalajara six months earlier.

The buyer's name was hidden behind a corporate trust.

But one signature appeared repeatedly.

Paulina Ortega Álvarez.

Alejandro's expression hardened.

He had never authorized the purchase.

He continued reading.

Another page listed unusually large transfers from one of Paulina's personal accounts to several consulting companies.

None of the names meant anything to him.

"What are these businesses?" he asked.

"We're still verifying them," Ricardo replied. "Some appear inactive. Others were created only recently."

Alejandro closed the folder.

"This is becoming much bigger than I imagined."

Before either man could continue, María knocked gently on the office door.

"I found something while cleaning Mrs. Paulina's dressing room."

She placed a small velvet jewelry box on the desk.

Inside wasn't jewelry.

It was a tiny silver key.

Attached to it was a faded storage-unit tag.

Unit C-117

No address.

No company name.

Only the number.

Ricardo carefully examined it.

"This could belong to a private storage facility."

Alejandro looked toward the window.

"If someone went to the trouble of hiding this..."

"...whatever is inside matters."

Just then, his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed the name of his attorney.

"Alejandro," the lawyer said without greeting, "I've just received notice that someone attempted to obtain copies of your estate planning documents last week."

Alejandro stood abruptly.

"Who?"

"There was no authorization."

The lawyer hesitated.

"But whoever requested them knew details that only close family members should have known."

Alejandro slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes moved from the silver key...

...to the security footage paused on his monitor...

...then to the folder lying open on his desk.

For the first time, he realized these weren't isolated events.

The hidden meetings.

The unexplained money.

The confidential documents.

The mysterious storage key.

Somewhere, all the pieces connected.

He simply hadn't found the missing link yet.

As rain clouds gathered over Zapopan that afternoon, Alejandro slipped the silver key into his pocket.

"Get the car ready," he told Ricardo.

"We're going to find out what Unit C-117 has been hiding."

Neither of them noticed that, from the upstairs balcony, Paulina had quietly watched the entire conversation.

She didn't know what Alejandro had discovered.

But she did know one thing.

If he reached that storage unit first...

May you like

The carefully constructed life she had spent years protecting could collapse in a single day.

End of Chapter 5.
