CHAPTER 2 — The Father Who Came Home Too Soon

Alejandro Álvarez rarely canceled meetings.
For fifteen years, investors joked that the only force capable of changing his schedule was an earthquake.
Yet that afternoon, halfway through a meeting in Guadalajara, an uneasy feeling settled over him so heavily that he couldn't concentrate on a single word.
He apologized, closed his laptop, and drove home without calling anyone.
As his black SUV rolled through the estate gates, something immediately felt wrong.
The gardens were silent.
No laughter.
No nanny pushing Santiago's stroller.
No little girl sitting beneath the jacaranda tree with a coloring book.
Only silence.
He stepped out of the vehicle.
"Valentina?" he called.
No answer.
"Santiago?"
Still nothing.
Inside the mansion, several employees suddenly looked nervous.
The housekeeper lowered her eyes.
The gardener stopped trimming the hedges.
Even the family chef avoided looking directly at him.
Alejandro's instincts sharpened.
"What happened while I was away?"
Nobody answered.
Before anyone could speak, Paulina appeared at the top of the staircase wearing an elegant smile.
"You're home early."
"I missed my family," Alejandro replied, studying her face.
"Where are the children?"
Paulina answered without hesitation.
"They're both asleep."
Alejandro frowned.
"At this hour?"
"They were tired."
Something about her tone didn't sound right.
He started walking upstairs.
Paulina quickly stepped in front of him.
"Don't wake the baby."
That single sentence made his suspicion grow stronger.
For the first time in months, Alejandro realized he couldn't remember the last time Valentina had run to greet him when he came home.
He gently moved past Paulina.
The children's rooms were empty.
The nursery was perfectly arranged.
Too perfectly.
The crib looked untouched.
No toys on the floor.
No blanket.
No bottle.
Nothing.
Alejandro slowly turned around.
"Where are my children?"
For a split second, Paulina's confident smile disappeared.
Then—
A faint sound drifted through the open hallway.
It was almost impossible to hear.
A child's voice.
Weak.
"...Daddy..."
Alejandro froze.
He ran toward the backyard doors, following the sound across the stone patio.
Near the far end of the garden, hidden behind tall hedges, he noticed the old kennel.
He had planned to remove it months ago.
As he got closer, he saw movement.
A tiny hand gripping the rusty bars.
"Daddy..."
Valentina's voice was barely a whisper.
Alejandro sprinted.
The heavy padlock refused to open.
Without thinking, he grabbed a nearby garden shovel and struck the lock again and again until it broke.
The gate swung open.
Valentina stumbled forward, still clutching Santiago tightly.
The baby was exhausted from the heat and crying softly, but he reached toward his father the moment he saw him.
Alejandro wrapped both children in his arms.
"What happened?" he asked gently.
Valentina hesitated.
She looked over his shoulder toward the mansion.
Paulina was standing in the distance.
Watching.
Smiling.
The little girl lowered her eyes.
"It... it was an accident."
Alejandro knew immediately those words hadn't come from an eight-year-old.
Someone had taught her to say them.
He carried both children inside and called the family doctor.
As the doctor treated Valentina's injured hand and examined Santiago, Alejandro noticed something else.
A small security monitor in his home office was still active.
One camera overlooked the rear garden.
Normally he never checked it.
Today, something told him he should.
He clicked the playback icon.
The timeline began rewinding.
2:11 p.m.
2:14 p.m.
2:17 p.m.
The video started.
Alejandro leaned closer to the screen.
His face slowly lost all color.

Everything he believed about his home—and about the woman he had married—was about to be tested by what that camera had silently recorded.
End of Chapter 2.
