CHAPTER 4 — The Hidden Evidence

The notebook remained open on Alejandro's desk.

Each page looked ordinary.

Each sentence was short.

But together, they painted a picture that no loving father ever wanted to see.

Alejandro closed his eyes for a moment.

He wasn't interested in assumptions.

He wanted facts.

Every single one.

A few minutes later, the head of security, Ricardo Fuentes, arrived carrying a locked equipment case and a portable hard drive.

"You said there was something unusual," Alejandro said.

Ricardo nodded.

"I checked the security logs after your message. One camera was disconnected briefly this morning, but the backup server still captured most of the activity."

Alejandro looked up.

"The backup server?"

"Our cameras record to two systems. Whoever interrupted the main feed either didn't know—or forgot—that the secondary recorder operates independently."

Ricardo connected the drive to the office computer.

A new folder appeared.

Archive Backup – July 13

"There are recordings from angles that never appear on the household monitor," Ricardo explained.

The first clip showed the service hallway.

At 1:58 p.m., Paulina was speaking with someone near the back entrance.

The visitor wore sunglasses and a baseball cap, making it impossible to identify them.

She handed the person a sealed envelope.

The visitor quickly disappeared through the side gate.

Alejandro frowned.

"Who is that?"

"I don't know yet," Ricardo admitted. "But the visitor wasn't scheduled, and no entry was logged."

Another clip appeared.

This one overlooked the garage.

Paulina was using her phone.

She seemed agitated.

Moments later, she placed a call.

Although the cameras recorded no audio, the phone records later confirmed that the conversation lasted almost twelve minutes.

Exactly the same twelve minutes during which one camera had been disconnected.

Ricardo leaned forward.

"I've already preserved the recordings. They can't be overwritten."

Before Alejandro could respond, there was another knock at the office door.

It was Dr. Lucía Moreno, the children's pediatrician.

She had finished examining Santiago and changing the bandage on Valentina's hand.

"How are they?" Alejandro asked immediately.

"They're resting," she replied calmly. "Santiago is stable, and Valentina's hand should heal well with proper care."

Alejandro released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

Dr. Moreno hesitated before continuing.

"I also spent some time talking with Valentina."

"What did she say?"

"Very little."

She paused.

"But one thing stood out."

Alejandro listened carefully.

"She didn't ask whether she was in trouble."

"She asked whether her little brother was safe."

Silence filled the room.

Ricardo quietly looked away.

Dr. Moreno continued.

"Children who feel responsible for protecting younger siblings often carry burdens far beyond their years. Right now, what they need most is safety, stability, and adults they can trust."

Alejandro nodded slowly.

"I understand."

That evening, he made a decision.

He instructed Ricardo to preserve every security recording.

He asked Dr. Moreno to document her examination and recommendations.

And he arranged for the children to stay in a private guest wing with a trusted nanny and two family members present until the situation could be fully understood.

No accusations.

No confrontations.

Not yet.

He wanted every step to be based on evidence.

As the sun disappeared beyond the hills of Zapopan, Alejandro stood alone in his office.

His phone buzzed again.

It was a message from Ricardo.

I identified the visitor from the side gate. Their vehicle appears in a traffic camera less than ten minutes later. The license plate belongs to a private investigator... hired three months ago.

Alejandro stared at the screen.

He had never hired a private investigator.

Which meant someone else had.

And whoever it was had been quietly operating around his family for months.

He looked once more at the frozen security image on his monitor.

This was no longer just about one afternoon.

Someone had been building a secret.

May you like

And tomorrow, Alejandro intended to find out who—and why.

End of Chapter 4.
