CHAPTER 5 — "The Name Everyone Was Afraid to Say"
Officer Brooks stared at the radio in disbelief.
"There’s someone else?"
The dispatcher’s voice came back immediately.
"The couple insists they were following instructions. They say they were paid to keep Lily moving from city to city until a certain man found her."
"A name?" Brooks asked.
A long pause.
Then one answer.
"Richard Ashford."
Detective Emma Collins froze.
"I know that name."
Brooks looked at her.
"He was once a respected financial adviser to wealthy families. Ten years ago, he disappeared after investigators uncovered a massive fraud scheme. Millions vanished, but most of the victims were too frightened—or too embarrassed—to testify."
Emma swallowed hard.
"Lily’s grandmother was one of his clients."
Back at the farmhouse, forensic investigators continued searching every room.
Max wandered quietly through the house.
Suddenly, he stopped in front of an old bookshelf.
He pawed gently at the floor.
Brooks knelt beside him.
The wooden boards sounded hollow.
Within minutes, investigators lifted one of the floorboards.
Hidden beneath it was a small waterproof case.
Inside were dozens of letters, financial records, and a USB drive.
Every document pointed to the same conclusion.
Years earlier, Lily’s grandmother had uncovered evidence proving that Richard Ashford had stolen fortunes from elderly families.
Instead of handing the evidence directly to authorities, she hid copies in different places.
If anything happened to her...
The truth would survive.
And now, Lily had unknowingly become the final link.
Detective Collins inserted the USB drive into a secure police computer.
A video appeared.
The screen flickered.
Then the familiar face of Lily’s grandmother filled the monitor.
She looked older than in the photographs.
Tired.
But determined.
"If you're watching this," she began softly, "it means I failed to protect Lily myself."
She smiled sadly.
"My sweet girl... if you're old enough to understand these words, remember this."
"No amount of money is worth losing your kindness."
"I never wanted revenge."
"I only wanted the truth to survive."
She looked directly into the camera.
"Richard believes every piece of evidence is gone."
"He is wrong."
"The last copy is hidden where he would never think to search..."
She reached toward the camera—
—and the recording suddenly ended.
Everyone stared in frustration.
"That's it?" Brooks muttered.
A forensic technician shook his head.
"No."
"The rest of the file was intentionally split."
"There has to be another storage device."
Just then, Lily quietly walked into the room carrying the torn teddy bear.
She reached inside the empty opening where the stuffing had been removed.
"I think Grandma forgot this."
Her tiny fingers pulled out something no one had noticed before.
A tiny memory card.
Everyone looked at Max.
The dog slowly wagged his tail.
