CHAPTER 7 — "The Woman Who Called Herself Lily's Mother"

Six months passed.

The farmhouse with the blue windows had become a place of healing instead of secrets.

Lily laughed again.

She went to school.

She planted sunflowers beneath her grandmother's favorite window.

And every Saturday morning, Officer Daniel Brooks brought Max to visit.

To Lily, Max wasn't a police dog anymore.

He was family.

For a while...

Everything seemed peaceful.

Until one rainy afternoon.

A black luxury SUV rolled slowly into the gravel driveway.

Three people stepped out.

Two lawyers.

And a woman wearing an expensive navy coat, carrying a leather folder.

She knocked once.

When Detective Emma Collins opened the door, the woman smiled politely.

"My name is Victoria Hale."

"I believe you're taking care of my daughter."

Emma's expression hardened.

"I'm sorry?"

Victoria took a slow breath.

"Lily."

"She's my biological child."

The room went silent.

Lily, who had been coloring at the kitchen table, looked toward the unfamiliar woman.

"I've never seen you before."

Victoria's smile faltered.

"You were only a baby."

Officer Brooks arrived moments later after receiving Emma's call.

Inside, Victoria calmly placed several official-looking documents on the table.

Birth records.

Hospital papers.

DNA reports.

Everything appeared genuine.

Even Brooks had to admit the paperwork looked convincing.

"If these are authentic," he said carefully, "they'll need to be verified."

Victoria nodded.

"I understand."

She glanced toward Lily with tears in her eyes.

"I've searched for her for years."

Lily quietly walked behind Max and held onto his collar.

She didn't cry.

She didn't speak.

She simply stayed close to the dog.

Max didn't bark.

He watched Victoria silently.

Calm.

Alert.

Reading every movement.

Hours later, forensic specialists examined the documents.

Something wasn't right.

The signatures matched...

But the hospital seal was slightly different from official records used that year.

One tiny detail.

Easy to miss.

Impossible to ignore.

Detective Collins smiled faintly.

"Someone copied these."

Victoria's composure cracked.

She stood abruptly.

"You don't understand!"

"I had no choice!"

Before anyone could respond, she burst into tears.

"I was Richard Ashford's assistant."

The room froze.

"He told me if I refused to help him..."

"...he would destroy my family."

Victoria collapsed into the chair.

"I never kidnapped Lily."

"I only forged papers after her grandmother refused to surrender the evidence."

Brooks looked at her carefully.

"Then why come now?"

Victoria reached into her purse.

She removed a faded photograph.

It showed Richard Ashford standing beside another man.

A man no investigator had ever identified.

Victoria whispered,

"Because Richard wasn't the mastermind."

She pointed to the stranger.

"That's the man who gave every order."

The detectives stared at the photo.

No one recognized him.

Except Lily.

She looked at the picture for several long seconds.

Then quietly whispered words that chilled everyone in the room.

"He visited Grandma."

Every head turned toward the little girl.

May you like

"When?" Brooks asked softly.

"The day before she got sick."
