Chapter 2 - Caught in the Crosshairs

The Setup UnfoldsThe warehouse went dead silent. Emily froze, the tape dispenser dropping from her hand and clattering against the concrete floor.

"My locker?" she whispered, her face draining of color. "I haven't even been to my locker since I clocked in."

"Save it for the judge, trash," Greer sneered, stepping forward with handcuffs provided by one of the officers. "We found the crate hidden right under your winter coat. Along with five more of your precious 'empty boxes' packed with stolen motherboards."

Adrian stood just two feet away, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. He knew exactly what had happened. Greer had panicked after Emily's defiance the previous night. He had moved up his timeline to eliminate her before she could talk to upper management.

"Wait," Adrian said, stepping between Emily and the police officer.

Greer’s eyes snapped to the new temp, his expression twisting into fury. "Who the hell asked you, new guy? Step back or you’re going down as an accomplice."

"Check the security feed for Locker Room B," Adrian said, his voice calm, projecting a terrifying authority that made the police officer pause. "Check who entered that room between 0600 and 0700 this morning. It wasn't Emily."

Greer laughed, though a bead of sweat broke out on his forehead. "The cameras in Locker Room B are down for maintenance today. Conveniently for her. Officer, arrest her now!"

The officer reached for Emily's arm. Instinctively, she shrank back, her eyes wide with terror—not just for herself, but for the people at the shelter who depended on her.

"Don't touch her," Adrian said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a black encrypted smartphone. He pressed a single button.

Suddenly, every television screen in the break room, every logistics monitor on the floor, and Greer’s own desktop computer flared to life. The screens didn't show the main warehouse feed. They showed a crystal-clear, high-definition angle of Locker Room B—captured by a hidden, independent optical camera Adrian’s team had installed weeks prior.

On the screen, Dennis Greer was clearly visible, laughing as he stuffed high-value microchip cases into Emily’s locker and covered them with her coat.

The Tables TurnThe crowd gasped. The police officer stopped, his hand freezing mid-air.

Greer’s face went from flush red to a sickly, pale green. "This... this is a fabrication! A deepfake!"

"It's a live, unedited stream from Ashford Corporate Security," Adrian said, finally pulling off his baseball cap and throwing it to the floor. He stood tall, his posture shifting instantly from a lowly temp to the ruthless billionaire tycoon who commanded thousands of men.

One of the older security guards looked at Adrian's face, gasped, and instantly dropped his head. "Mr. Ashford... sir."

The name echoed through the warehouse like a thunderclap. Mr. Ashford.

Emily’s head snapped toward him, her breath hitching. The man she had been trying to protect, the man she thought was a desperate temp, was the elusive, media-shy owner of the entire empire.

"Dennis Greer," Adrian said, stepping into the supervisor's personal space, his shadow looming over the trembling man. "You are fired. Effective five seconds ago. Officers, I believe you have the wrong person in front of you."

The police officers didn't hesitate. They slammed Greer against the nearest packing table, clicking the handcuffs onto his wrists. As Greer was dragged out, screaming profanities, the entire warehouse erupted into cheers.

But Emily didn't cheer. She stood frozen, looking at Adrian as if he were a ghost.

"Who are you really?" she whispered.

Before Adrian could answer, Marcus burst through the side doors, his face pale. He ran straight to Adrian, ignoring the crowd.

"Sir, we have a massive problem," Marcus breathed out, his voice shaking. "It’s about your daughter, Chloe. Her nanny just called. Chloe's school bus never arrived at the house. And we just received an anonymous text."

Marcus held up his phone. The text read: You took our man Greer. We took your kid. If you want her back alive, Emily Carter brings us the encryption keys to the Ashford Downtown Vault tonight. Alone.
