Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

The CollapseThe factory erupted into chaos. Gunfire echoed from the lower levels—Adrian wasn't dead. He had survived the blast and was fighting his way up with his personal security team.

"Secure the kid!" Vance screamed to his remaining men on the catwalks.

Emily scrambled on the floor, her hands desperately tearing at the duct tape on Chloe's mouth. "Chloe, sweetie, look at me. I'm Emily. Your daddy sent me. We are going to get out of here, okay?"

Chloe nodded tearfully as the tape came off. "Daddy... I want my daddy!"

"I know, baby, I know," Emily said, pulling a pocket knife from her work pants to cut the ropes binding the girl's wrists.

Before she could finish, a heavy boot slammed into Emily's ribs, sending her flying across the concrete floor. She gasped, the wind completely knocked out of her as she rolled into the dirt.

Thomas Vance stood over her, his face contorted in rage, lifting his gun to aim between her eyes. "You ruined a fifty-million-dollar operation for a couple of empty boxes and a shelter, you pathetic bitch."

BANG.

A shot rang out, but it didn't come from Vance's gun.

Vance collapsed forward, a bullet wound shattering his shoulder.

Adrian burst through the heavy metal doors of the bay, his clothes torn, covered in soot and blood from the basement explosion. In his hand was a tactical firearm. His eyes were wild, searching the room until they landed on his daughter.

"Chloe!" he roared.

"Daddy!" Chloe cried out, running toward him.

But Vance, bleeding heavily on the floor, smiled a bloody, psychotic smile. With his good hand, he pulled a small remote detonator from his pocket. "If I don't get the vault... nobody leaves this building."

He pressed the button.

The Falling CeilingA series of structural charges exploded along the main support pillars of Sector 7. The concrete columns shattered, and the massive, thousand-ton industrial roof began to collapse inward, raining massive blocks of cement down onto the floor.

Adrian leaped forward, catching Chloe in his arms and shielding her body with his own as debris crashed around them.

But Emily was trapped on the other side of the collapsing zone. A massive steel beam fell from the ceiling, pinning her leg to the ground. She let out a agonizing scream as the weight crushed her down.

"Emily!" Adrian screamed, trying to run toward her through the falling dust and fire, but a massive wall of collapsing concrete slammed down between them, completely blocking the path.

Through a small gap in the debris, Adrian could see Emily, her face pale, blood pooling from her leg under the heavy steel beam. The roof directly above her was groaning, about to cave in entirely.

"Adrian, take Chloe and run!" Emily shouted through the dust, her voice cracking with pain. "The whole sector is coming down! Go!"

"No! I'm not leaving you!" Adrian yelled back, his fingers tearing at the jagged concrete blocks blocking the gap, his billionaire hands bleeding and raw. "Marcus! Help me move this!"

"Sir, the structure is totally unstable! If we don't leave in ten seconds, Chloe will be buried alive!" Marcus yelled, pulling at Adrian's jacket.

Adrian looked at his crying daughter in his arms, then through the gap at Emily. Emily met his eyes, a peaceful, beautiful smile on her face amidst the horror.

"Save your daughter, Adrian," she whispered. "You promised me she'd be safe."

With a final, desperate roar, Adrian was forced backward by Marcus as a massive explosion of dust and concrete completely filled the gap, obscuring Emily from view as the roof finally gave way.
