Chapter 4 - Into the Lion's Den

The Abandoned FactoryThe Packard Automotive Plant was a crumbling monument to a bygone era. Massive concrete pillars held up roofs that had caved in long ago, allowing the moonlight to cast jagged shadows across the debris-strewn floor.
Emily walked through the darkness, her boots crunching on broken glass. In her right hand, she clutched the dummy flash drive. In her ear, Adrian’s breathing was a constant, comforting rhythm.
"I’m in the main bay," Emily whispered, keeping her voice low.
"We see you on the thermal drone," Adrian's voice came through the earpiece, tight and strained. "There are three heat signatures positioned on the catwalks above you. And one large signature in the center room. Hold on, Emily. I’m moving into position from the basement access."
Suddenly, a blinding floodlight slammed into Emily's face, forcing her to shield her eyes.
"Stop right there, garbage lady," a harsh voice echoed through the rafters.
Out of the shadows stepped Thomas Vance, a notorious underworld fixer. And tied to a metal chair right next to him was Chloe. The little girl had her father's striking blue eyes, filled with tears, her mouth covered with heavy duct tape.
When Chloe saw Emily, she let out a muffled whimper.
"I have the drive," Emily shouted, holding up the flash drive. "Let the girl go first."
Vance laughed dryly, pulling a silver pistol from his jacket and resting it casually on the back of Chloe's chair. "You don't dictate terms here. Toss the drive across the floor, or the kid takes a swim."
The Double CrossInside the command van, Marcus suddenly gasped. "Mr. Ashford! The thermal signatures... they aren't syndicate guards. Those are tactical gear outfits. Someone leaked our private frequency!"
Before Marcus could finish the sentence, Emily’s earpiece erupted with static.
"Emily! It's a trap! Get out of—" Adrian’s voice was abruptly cut off by a loud explosion from the basement levels below.
Emily’s heart leaped into her throat. Adrian.
Vance smiled, his phone buzzing in his hand. "Ah, looks like my associates just took care of the billionaire. He really thought he could play hero in a temp shirt." He pointed his gun directly at Emily. "Now, give me the drive, or you die next."
Emily looked at Chloe, whose eyes were wide with absolute terror. The earpiece was dead. Adrian was trapped or worse. She was completely alone.
But instead of dropping to her knees, Emily felt a cold, unyielding rage wash over her. She took a slow step forward, her fingers tightening around the flash drive.
"You want the vault keys?" Emily said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that defied the gun pointed at her chest. "Come and get them."
She threw the flash drive—not at Vance's feet, but deep into the rusted machinery of a massive, half-collapsed industrial press twenty feet to her left.

"Damn it!" Vance roared, instinctively turning his weapon toward the dark machinery.
That split second was all Emily needed. She bolted forward, slamming her body weight into Chloe’s chair, knocking the little girl and the chair flat to the ground just as a bullet whizzed through the air where Chloe’s head had been a second before.
