Chapter 1 - INTO THE BLACKOUTThe shadows stretched long and violent across the marble floor as the house plunged into pitch darkness. The pitch-black room seemed to collapse inward, suffocating us under the heavy silence that followed my father’s gravelly voice.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Father.
The man who had supposedly been bedridden in a private sanctuary in Switzerland for the past two years. The man who was supposed to be dying. Yet there he stood, silhouette framed by the faint moonlight bleeding through the French doors, holding a heavy silencer-equipped firearm resting casually by his side.
“Father...” Ethan breathed, his smug demeanor instantly evaporating into sheer terror. Even my mother, who had ruled this household with an iron fist, backed away until her heels clicked frantically against the baseboard.
“Quiet, Ethan,” my father commanded. His voice wasn’t weak; it was smooth, cold, and dripping with absolute authority. “You’ve always been a fool. You bring a cheap mistress into my house, humiliate a woman who carries royal blood in her veins, and let your little brother collect an entire arsenal of our family’s darkest secrets right under your pathetic nose.”
Claire whimpered softly behind me. I instinctively reached back, my fingers interlacing with her trembling, ice-cold hand. I pulled her close into my side, feeling the rhythmic, terrified flutter of her baby moving against her belly.
“Listen to me, Claire,” I whispered, keeping my eyes locked on the darkness ahead. “The moment I give the signal, you run toward the underground wine cellar. The door is reinforced steel. Lock it from the inside.”
“What about you, Julian?” she sobbed, her voice barely a breath. “They’ll kill you...”
“They won’t get the chance,” I lied.
The truth was, the detective’s warning was still echoing in my ear: The files are gone. There’s a warrant for your arrest. My father hadn’t just returned—he had dismantled my entire trap before I even had the chance to spring it. The police, the court records, the inspectors—he owned them all.
My mother finally found her voice, though it quavered violently. “Arthur... you’re back. Julian—Julian stole from us! He took the land deeds, he called the police—”
BANG.
A shot tore through the air, shattering the thousand-dollar crystal chandelier right above my mother’s head. Glass showered over her like frozen rain. She screamed, falling to her knees—the exact same spot where she had forced Claire to scrub moments before.
“Shut your mouth, Victoria,” my father growled, stepping into the dim moonlight. His face was gaunt, his eyes hollow and burning with ruthless intelligence. “You thought you were running this empire. But you forgot who built the blood-stained foundation.”
He turned his gaze toward me, the barrel of his gun rising slowly until it pointed directly at my chest.
“Julian,” he said softly. “My brightest son. You always did have a bleeding heart for the weak. But you made one critical mistake.”
“I made no mistakes,” I said, stepping fully in front of Claire, shielding her body with mine. “The physical files in the vault were a decoy, Father. Do you really think I’d trust the local precinct with the only copies?”
My father paused, his eyebrow twitching slightly.
“Every single wire transfer, every land theft from Claire’s father, every poisoned well and bribed judge... it’s all automated,” I bluffed, praying to God my voice didn't crack. “If my heartbeat spikes above a certain threshold, or if I don't enter a dead-man code every sixty minutes... the entire archive goes live to the Federal Bureau and every international news outlet in Europe.”
The silence in the room was absolute. Even Vanessa, who was still clutching Claire’s stolen diamond necklace, froze in sheer panic.
“You’re bluffing,” Ethan hissed, though sweating profusely. “Shoot him, Dad! Shoot him and that worthless woman!”
Before my father could pull the trigger, the front doors burst open with a deafening crash. flashbang grenades exploded in the grand foyer, blinding light and ear-splitting detonations filling the room.
It wasn't the police.
Tactical gear, unmarked black uniforms, automatic rifles.
“CLEAR!” a voice shouted through a gas mask.
In the chaos, I grabbed Claire around the waist, hauled her to her feet, and bolted toward the back corridor.
“GET THEM!” my father roared through the smoke and ringing ears. Shots echoed down the hallway, plaster exploding off the walls inches from my head.
We made it to the heavy oak door leading to the kitchen, bursting into the night air outside. The rain was pouring down in sheets, drenching us instantly. My car was parked down the long, winding driveway, but I knew the estate gates would be locked.
“Julian, I can’t... I can’t run anymore!” Claire gasped, clutching her stomach in agony. She collapsed against my chest, her face pale, rain mixed with tears streaking down her cheeks. “The baby... Julian, the baby is coming!”
I looked back at the burning mansion, then down at the woman I had secretly loved in silence for three years. Contractions were tearing through her. We were hunted, framed for crimes we didn't commit, trapped in a torrential storm with the ruthless head of a criminal syndicate behind us.
And then, headlight beams cut through the rain from down the private road. A heavy armored SUV skidded to a halt right in front of us.
The driver’s side door threw open. A woman in a dark trench coat stepped out, holding an umbrella.
May you like
My eyes widened in disbelief.
It was Vanessa.
