Chapter 3 - BLOODLINES AND LIESThe air in the hidden safehouse smelled of rust, sea salt, and old concrete. Outside, the waves crashed violently against the pier of the abandoned shipping yard.

Inside, under the dim yellow light of a single hanging bulb, Claire lay resting on a makeshift bed, the baby wrapped safely in clean, warm blankets. She was fast asleep, utterly exhausted from the nightmare of the night.

I stood by the reinforced steel window, staring out into the storm, my hands shaking violently.

The crescent birthmark.

It was an undeniable genetic trait passed down through the male line of my mother’s side—a rare hereditary mark. Ethan didn't have it. My father didn't have it.

I had it.

And now, the baby girl sleeping soundly across the room had it.

“You figured it out, didn't you?”

I turned around. Vanessa was standing near the door, holding two mugs of hot black coffee. She handed one to me, her expression solemn and unreadable.

“How?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “How is that possible? Claire and I... we never... I never touched her like that. I respected her too much. I stayed in the background!”

Vanessa took a slow sip from her cup. “Do you remember four nights before Ethan and Claire’s wedding nine months ago? The charity gala in Monaco?”

My mind raced back. Monaco. The heavy drinking. The corporate celebration.

“Ethan drugged you, Julian,” Vanessa revealed, her voice dripping with venom. “He wanted to compromise you. He planned to frame you in a bed with a hired escort to humiliate you and strip you of your share in the family trust before the wedding. But things went wrong.”

I felt the ground beneath my feet begin to tilt. “What do you mean, wrong?”

“Ethan drugged Claire that same night, too,” Vanessa explained, stepping closer. “He wanted to create a fake scandal to force her family into signing over the land rights faster. He put both of you in the same suite at the hotel, intending to bring the paparazzi in the morning. But he underestimated you. Even drugged out of your mind, you fought off his men. You protected Claire. But neither of you were in control of your senses.”

My heart stopped. The memories of that night had always been a foggy, blacked-out blur. I remembered waking up in that hotel room with torn sheets, blood on my knuckles, and a deep, aching void in my memory. I had assumed I had fought off thugs.

“Claire woke up before you,” Vanessa continued. “She realized what Ethan had attempted. She was terrified. She fled the hotel before the paparazzi arrived. She never told a soul because she thought Ethan would destroy her family if the scandal got out. She believed... she believed the baby was Ethan’s because Ethan forced himself on her two days later to cover his tracks.”

Tears burned the back of my eyes. A wave of immense, suffocating grief and rage washed over me.

Claire hadn't just been abused—she had been trapped in a calculated psychological meat grinder designed by my own brother. And the child she was carrying wasn't the child of her abuser.

She was mine.

“Julian,” Vanessa said softly, touching my arm. “You are the father. That baby girl is yours. And Claire... Claire has loved you since the day you stood up to your mother for her three years ago. She just thought you hated her because you always kept your distance.”

I looked over at Claire. Her pale face looked peaceful in her sleep. The tiny baby rustled in her blanket, letting out a tiny, soft sigh.

I walked over slowly, dropping to my knees beside the bed. I gently reached out, my fingers trembling as I brushed a strand of damp hair from Claire’s forehead, then touched the baby’s tiny, warm hand.

“I will burn the world to the ground before I let them hurt you again,” I whispered into the quiet room.

Suddenly, a loud RED ALERT chime echoed from Vanessa’s laptop on the desk.

Vanessa sprinted to the screen, her keyboard clacking furiously. “Shit! They found us!”

“How?” I demanded, spinning around, pulling my gun. “You said this place was off the grid!”

“It is!” Vanessa yelled, panic breaking her voice. “They didn't track our signal! Ethan... Ethan just went live on national television!”

She turned the laptop screen toward me.

On the live news broadcast, my brother Ethan was standing in front of a podium outside the city police headquarters. He had fake tears streaming down his face, his clothing intentionally disheveled. Beside him stood my mother, sobbing hysterically into a tissue.

“My fellow citizens,” Ethan wept into the microphones. “Tonight, a tragic family nightmare unfolded. My younger brother, Julian, succumbed to a severe psychotic break. He attacked our home, shot our father, and kidnapped my heavily pregnant wife, Claire. He is armed, extremely dangerous, and holding her hostage. A reward of five million dollars is being offered for his capture... dead or alive.”

The ticker at the bottom of the screen read: NATIONWIDE MANHUNT ISSUED FOR JULIAN VANE – WANTED FOR KIDNAPPING AND ATTEMPTED MURDER.

Before I could even process the absolute audacity of his lie, the heavy iron doors of our safehouse exploded inward with a deafening blast of fire and steel.
