Chapter 7 - THE MASTERSTROKEI caught the keys, frantically unlocking the heavy iron cuffs from my wrists. My arms fell limp, blood surging painfully back into my hands.

“Where is Claire? Where is my daughter?” I gasped, grabbing Vanessa by her shoulders.
“They’re safe, Julian!” Vanessa reassured me, holding me up as my legs almost buckled. “I hid them at my private medical clinic in the neighboring city under federal witness protection! The phone call your father heard was a spoofed audio AI loop I uploaded to Director Vance’s compromised cell tower!”
I stared at her in utter disbelief. “You... you hacked the Federal Director’s phone line?”
“I spent six months building a back-door entrance into their private network,” Vanessa grinned, pulling a tactical vest out of her duffel bag and throwing it to me. “Now put this on. We have five minutes before your father realizes his wife isn't coming back up.”
I strapped on the body armor, racking the slide of a heavy 9mm pistol Vanessa handed me. The pain in my ribs vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, lethal adrenaline surge.
“What’s the play?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
“Your father and Ethan are upstairs in the grand study with their foreign investors and corrupt officials,” Vanessa explained, pulling out a tablet screen showing the house’s internal security feed. “They’re celebrating the closing of the land transfer deal right now, thinking you’re dead and Claire is captured.”
On the screen, I saw my father standing at the head of the long mahogany conference table in the study, raising a glass of champagne with six high-ranking politicians, three international bankers, and Ethan.
“They think they’ve won,” I said.
“They do,” Vanessa agreed. “And that’s why every single word spoken in that room for the last twenty minutes has been broadcast live.”
I looked at her, my eyes widening. “Broadcast where?”
Vanessa smiled—a cold, terrifying smile.
“To every national news network, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and every major social media platform on the planet. I tapped the study’s audio system three hours ago. The whole world just heard your father detail his entire human trafficking, murder, and land theft operation live.”
A massive grin spread across my face. “Let's go say goodbye.”
We kicked open the heavy iron doors of the basement and charged up the grand staircase.
Upstairs in the grand study, the atmosphere was euphoric. Ethan was laughing, holding a glass of scotch, clinking it against a crooked senator’s glass.
“To the Vane Empire!” Ethan toasted loudly. “May it reign for another hundred years!”
BOOM!
The double doors of the study blew inward off their hinges, crashing onto the long mahogany table, shattering glasses and sending champagne flying everywhere.
The politicians and bankers shrieked in terror, diving under the table.
I stepped through the smoke, tactical vest strapped tight, pistol raised, with Vanessa flanking my right side.
Ethan dropped his glass. It shattered on the floor. His face drained of all color as if he were staring at a ghost rising from hell.
“J-Julian?!” Ethan stammered, stumbling backward into a bookcase. “You’re... you were dead!”
My father didn't panic. He slowly set his scotch down on the mantelpiece, his hand moving subtly toward the drawer of his desk where his firearm was kept.
“You always were persistent, Julian,” my father said smoothly. “But coming here alone? That is sheer stupidity. Look around you. You are surrounded by men who control the army, the police, and the courts.”
“Not anymore, Arthur,” I said, throwing a portable broadcast monitor onto the center of the table.
The screen lit up.
It showed live news feeds from CNN, BBC, and local news outlets. The headlines were flashing in giant red letters across the world:
VANE FAMILY EMPIRE EXPOSED: LIVE RECORDINGS OF MURDER, LAND THEFT, AND CORRUPTION BROADCAST GLOBALLY. FEDERAL MARSHALS AND MILITARY POLICE EN ROUTE.
Outside the mansion windows, the sound of dozens of heavy military helicopters began to shake the very foundations of the house. Searchlights cut through the dark night, blinding the occupants of the room.
“THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND THE UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE!” a voice echoed from a loudspeaker outside. “BUILDING IS SURROUNDED! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUT WITH YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD!”
Panic erupted in the room. The corrupt politicians and bankers began screaming, scrambling over each other to run toward the exit, only to be cut off by tactical teams swarming through the shattered French doors.
Ethan fell to his knees, weeping like a coward, raising his trembling hands into the air. “I SURRENDER! IT WAS ALL MY DAD! IT WAS ALL ETHAN AND MY MOTHER! I WAS FORCED!”
“Pathetic,” I spat, looking down at my sniveling brother.
My father, realizing his entire world had collapsed in a single instant, suddenly pulled a snub-nosed revolver from his desk drawer and aimed it directly at my face.
“If I’m going to hell, son,” my father roared, his eyes wild with insane fury, “YOU’RE COMING WITH ME!”

BANG!
A shot echoed through the room.
