Chapter 8 - Awakening in the ICUTwo hours later, the police sirens outside Laurent Enterprises sounded like a choir of angels to Lucas.

The federal financial crimes unit had swarmed the building, hauling away Jonathan Sterling, Vance, and four senior vice presidents in handcuffs as flashing blue lights painted the downtown skyscrapers in neon stripes. The media was already outside like a pack of wolves, but inside the private VIP wing of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital, it was quiet, sterile, and warm.

Clara Evans stirred on the crisp white bed. Her right leg was wrapped in a heavy cast, suspended by a mechanical pulley, but the color had returned to her cheeks.

She blinked open her eyes, expecting to see the gray, dripping ceiling of a break room or the harsh fluorescent glare of the janitorial supply closet. Instead, she saw clean white walls, a vase of fresh white lilies, and a sleeping little boy curled up in an oversized leather armchair, clutching a patched teddy bear.

And sitting beside her bed, scrolling quietly through a tablet computer, was Thomas Laurent. His suit jacket was gone, his tie was discarded, and his sleeves were rolled up.

Clara gasped, trying to sit up, but a sharp pain in her leg stopped her. "Mr... Mr. Laurent? Where... where are we? Did I lose my job? Am I fired?"

Thomas looked up. The cold, impenetrable billionaire mask was entirely gone. His eyes were tired, but remarkably light, as if a mountain had been lifted off his shoulders.

"You're not fired, Clara," Thomas said softly, setting the tablet aside. "In fact, you just received a promotion."

Clara stared at him, bewildered. "What?"

"Effective immediately, you are the new Director of Corporate Welfare and Facilities Management for Laurent Enterprises," Thomas said, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips. "With a retroactive salary adjustment, full medical benefits, and a permanent clause in your contract stating you never have to work a night shift again unless you genuinely want to."

Tears welled up in Clara’s eyes. She looked across the room at Lucas, who stirred, rubbed his eyes, and sat up with a yawn.

"Mom?" Lucas mumbled, scrambling out of the chair and rushing to the side of the bed, burying his face in her uninjured arm. "Mom, you're awake! We did it! We beat them!"

Clara wrapped her arms around her son, burying her face in his messy brown hair as silent, heavy tears of relief soaked his school shirt. She looked back at Thomas, her voice trembling. "How... how is this possible? The papers... the safe..."

"David's files were recovered," Thomas said quietly, his gaze dropping to the floor for a brief second before meeting hers with unwavering respect. "Your husband was a good man, Clara. He tried to stop them. I'm sorry it took me this long to see what was happening in my own house."

Lucas pulled away from his mother, wiped his nose with his sleeve, and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a single, shiny quarter that had escaped the plastic box.

He walked over to Thomas and held it out.

"Here," Lucas said seriously. "Change from the four-eighty-two. You gave me back my mom. That's a good deal."

Thomas looked down at the quarter in the small palm. He didn't laugh. He gently closed Lucas's fingers around the coin, folding the boy's hand into a tight fist.

"Keep it, CEO Lucas," Thomas said, standing up and buttoning his cuffs. "You're going to need your capital. We have a company to rebuild tomorrow."
