Chapter 4 - The Rat in the TrapUncovering the Syndicate's Bleeding WoundsBy dawn, the generator outside hummed a steady bassline against the pattering rain. Gabriel hadn't slept. His eyes were bloodshot, fixed entirely on the screen where data packets downloaded from encrypted servers were decrypting one by one.

“Look at this,” Gabriel muttered, beckoning me over. I swung my legs off the cot, wincing as my sore muscles protested, and shuffled across the cold concrete floor to peer over his shoulder.
On the screen was a detailed organizational chart of the Russo syndicate, but overlaid in glowing red lines were connections leading directly out of the organization and straight into Connor Bell’s inner circle. More damning still was a series of encrypted audio files recovered from a secure backup server Daniel kept hidden in his downtown office.
Gabriel hit play on the first audio file.
Static hissed from the laptop’s small speakers, followed immediately by the unmistakable, oily voice of Daniel Shaw.
“Just make sure the girl’s body is unidentifiable before you dump it in the river,” Daniel’s recorded voice said smoothly, addressing an unknown mercenary. “Russo is already buying the betrayal narrative hook, line, and sinker. Once the warehouse goes up in flames and the girl takes the fall, the entire operation falls into our lap. Bell gets his territory in the north district, and we split the offshore reserves three ways.”
A cold sweat broke out across my back as I listened to the man I had trusted as a colleague, a protector, and a friend casually discuss my murder and the destruction of everything Gabriel had built.
Gabriel slammed his fist onto the metal desk, the laptop rattling violently. “The bastard,” he hissed through clenched teeth. “For eight months, I mourned you while he stood at my right hand, feeding me lies, whispering poison into my ear every single day.”
“He’s thorough, Gabriel,” I said, placing a calming hand on his tense shoulder. “If we go after him directly with just these audio files, his network inside the police department and city hall will bury us before we even reach his front door. We need to cut off his escape routes first.”
Gabriel looked up at me, surprise and deep respect flickering in his dark eyes. Even after everything—the torture, the betrayal, the months of starvation—my tactical mind hadn't dulled. “You’re right,” he admitted, a grim smile touching his lips. “Daniel thinks he’s hunting us down, but he doesn't realize he’s walking right into a slaughterhouse of his own making.”
“What’s your play?” I asked.

“We use his greed against him,” Gabriel said, typing rapidly on the keyboard. “Daniel has a private meeting scheduled tonight with Connor Bell’s chief financial officer to finalize the transfer of my remaining syndicate holdings. He thinks he’s closing the deal of a lifetime.”
“And we’re going to be there to crash the party,” I finished, a spark of fierce defiance igniting in my chest.
