Gabriel sat across the polished mahogany desk, signing a series of legal documents that systematically dismantled the shell companies Daniel had used to siphon the syndicate’s wealth. Every asset, every offshore account, and every territory was flowing back under Gabriel’s absolute control.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, sipping hot tea while watching the sun glint off the waters of Lake Michigan. The nightmare of the Pilsen apartment, the frozen nights of hiding, and the terror of the knife wound felt like something from another lifetime.
Gabriel finished signing the final document, set the heavy Montblanc pen down on the desk, and walked over to me. He wrapped his arms gently around my waist from behind, resting his chin softly on my shoulder. His hands slid down to cradle my swollen stomach, where our baby gave a reassuring, gentle kick against his palms.
“It’s over,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “The syndicate is ours again. Connor Bell’s operations have been seized by the federal task force based on the files Daniel left behind. We are safe, Elena.”
“And the scars?” I asked softly, looking down at my hands where the faint mark of the burn still lingered on my wrist.
