CHAPTER 1 — The Horse Everyone Called a Monster

The palace had never known fear like this.

Not because of war.

Not because of enemies.

But because of one magnificent black stallion worth ten million dollars.

Every servant whispered about him.

They called him Shadow King.

His glossy coat shimmered beneath the Arabian sun like polished obsidian, his muscles rippled beneath his skin, and his eyes burned with something no one could explain.

It wasn't rage.

It was grief.

The sheikh refused to believe it.

"I paid ten million dollars for perfection," Sheikh Kareem thundered as another stable door splintered beneath the stallion's kick.

"I will not be humiliated by an animal."

Trainer after trainer failed.

Professional riders from Europe.

Champions from Qatar.

Military horse handlers.

Even a famous horse whisperer flown in from Spain left with a broken collarbone.

Shadow King trusted no one.

He bit.

He kicked.

He charged anyone who entered his stall.

Within three weeks, six people had been hospitalized.

One guard nearly died after the stallion crushed his ribs against the stable wall.

The palace veterinarian delivered grim news.

"If this continues... the horse must be euthanized."

Silence filled the royal dining hall.

Ten million dollars...

Reduced to a death sentence.

The sheikh slammed his fist against the table.

"No!"

Yet even he no longer dared enter the stable.

Until one quiet morning...

A young palace assistant named Leila walked past the enclosure carrying fresh herbs.

Instead of shrinking away, she stopped.

Shadow King stopped too.

The horse that attacked everyone simply stared at her.

His ears slowly lifted.

His breathing calmed.

Leila smiled softly.

"You've been waiting for someone, haven't you?"

The stable workers gasped.

The stallion lowered his enormous head.

No attack.

No scream.

No violence.

Only silence.

The sheikh happened to witness everything.

His pride wouldn't let him admit what he'd seen.

"You think you're special?" he sneered.

"No."

"I think he's terrified."

The words struck harder than any insult.

"Terrified?" the sheikh barked.

"He's dangerous!"

Leila shook her head.

"No, Your Highness."

"Dangerous horses attack without warning."

"This one warns everyone before defending himself."

The entire stable fell silent.

The sheikh crossed his arms.

"Then prove it."

"I'll pay you ten thousand dollars."

"I don't want your money."

"What do you want?"

Leila met his gaze without blinking.

"I want to become your wife."

Laughter exploded across the courtyard.

Even the royal guards struggled to breathe between laughs.

The sheikh wiped tears from his eyes.

"You?"

"The daughter of a stable worker?"

"You want to become queen?"

Leila answered calmly.

"No."

"I want you to keep your promise."

The sheikh smirked.

"Fine."

"If by tomorrow evening that beast follows you willingly..."

"I'll marry you before every noble in this kingdom."

No one noticed the old stable master turning pale.

Because he recognized something about the young woman's eyes...

Something he hadn't seen for twenty-five years.

Something that belonged to someone the palace insisted had died.

And suddenly...

May you like

He realized Leila had not come for a husband.

She had come back for the truth.
