Chapter 1 - The First Domino FallsThe shockwave didn’t hit Vanessa through a shouting match or a tearful confrontation; it hit her husband’s bank account and business reputation first.

Three days after leaving the beachfront hotel, Mark received an urgent call while sitting by the pool with my parents. It was from David, his senior business partner and fifty-percent co-owner of their high-end commercial contracting firm, Apex Builders.

"Mark, what the hell is going on?" David’s voice crackled through the speaker, cold and sharp. "I just got a call from the municipal housing authority. They’re putting our bid for the downtown plaza renovation on hold pending an ethics and character review of the primary partners."

Mark stood up, spilling his iced tea. "An ethics review? David, that contract is worth four million dollars! We spent six months preparing that proposal. Why would they review us?"

"Because," David said flatly, "the board received a formal, fully documented dossier regarding workplace liability, professional integrity, and domestic negligence involving a minor on a corporate-sponsored family retreat. A copy of the hotel incident report, time-stamped witness statements from hotel staff, and a recorded text from your father-in-law dismissing child endangerment were attached to an anonymous review request. And Mark... my name is on this company too. I have three daughters. If you and your family think it's acceptable to lock a six-year-old orphan child out in a hallway for three hours while you watch television, you have a severe moral rot that I will not let infect my business."

"Wait, David, listen to me—that was just a family misunderstanding—"

"The review committee meets tomorrow morning," David interrupted, clicking the end call button.

Mark stared at his phone in sheer disbelief. He turned to look at Vanessa, who was lounging on a chaise lounge, wearing oversized designer sunglasses.

"What's wrong with David?" Vanessa asked lazily, applying lip balm. "Tell him to stop being dramatic. We have dinner reservations at seven."

"Vanessa," Mark whispered, his face turning pale. "David just put the plaza contract on hold. He... he knows about what happened to Lily at the hotel."

Vanessa's hand froze mid-gesture. She pulled down her sunglasses, her eyes narrowing. "Who told him? Did Claire call him?"

"Yes," Mark said, his voice rising in panic. "Claire called him. And she didn't lie, Vanessa. She sent him the hotel report."

Across the patio, my father looked up from his newspaper, frowning. "Nonsense," my father scoffed, walking over. "Claire wouldn't dare ruin her own family's livelihood over a minor discipline issue. It’s a bluff. I’ll call David myself. He respects me; I built this town's zoning commission."

My father pulled out his phone, dialed David's number, and put it on speaker. It rang twice before going straight to voicemail.

Little did they know, David wasn't the only one who had received a package that morning.
