Chapter 4 - The Safe HavenOn the other side of town, far away from the toxic fallout of my family's crumbling empire, Lily and I were sitting on a plush white rug in our new hotel suite, building a magnificent castle out of multicolored plastic blocks.

The television was playing a cheerful animated movie at a low volume. The lamps were all turned on, casting a warm, golden glow across the room. There were no shadows, no locked doors, and no cold, dismissive voices.

Lily reached over, placing a bright yellow crown on top of her block tower. She looked up at me with those wide, clear brown eyes that always reminded me so much of Daniel.

"Mommy?" she asked softly. "Are we ever going back to see Grandma and Grandpa?"

I set down a block, pulled her onto my lap, and wrapped my arms around her tight. I breathed in the sweet scent of strawberry shampoo, feeling the steady, calming rhythm of her little heartbeat.

"No, sweet girl," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "We are never going back there. You are safe with me. Nobody will ever make you feel small, and nobody will ever lock you out again. I promise you."

Lily smiled, burying her face against my neck. "Good. Because I like this room. It has big windows and a giant bed."

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an email notification from my attorney.

I opened the attachment. Vanessa’s high-priced divorce attorney had already sent an emergency communication. They were begging for a mediation session, offering to sign an immediate non-disparagement agreement, surrender all claims to the family trust property, and issue a formal written apology in exchange for dropping the corporate sabotage review against Mark’s company.

I didn't even open the document. I simply archived it. An apology forced by legal terror wasn't an apology at all; it was just panic. And I was done accepting scraps of manufactured remorse.
