Chapter 5 - The TransformationHours later, standing in front of the full-length mirror in the master guest suite, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me.

The emerald-silk dress hugged my curves, cascading down to the floor in a sleek, elegant silhouette. Mrs. Gable had styled my long dark hair into sophisticated waves that framed my face, and a touch of makeup highlighted cheekbones I didn't even know I had. Sofi was dressed in a matching miniature white silk dress, looking like a tiny angel.

The door clicked open, and Alexander stepped into the room.

He had changed into a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that made his striking features even more pronounced. He stopped dead in his tracks. For a moment, the cold, untouchable corporate titan vanished, replaced by a man utterly captivated.

His eyes swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a second before meeting my gaze in the mirror.

"Breathtaking," he said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register.

"Thank you," I whispered, smoothing the fabric nervously. "I still feel like I'm playing dress-up."

"You belong here just as much as anyone else in that room," Alexander said, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating from him. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Opening it, he revealed a stunning diamond necklace—a delicate vine of white gold and sparkling stones.

"Alexander, no, I can't wear that," I gasped, stepping back. "It must cost a fortune!"

"It's family iron," he said simply, lifting the necklace from the box. "My grandmother's. And it needs to be worn tonight to prove a point to my stepmother, who believes she controls every heirloom in this family."

Before I could protest, he stepped behind me. His warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of my neck as he fastened the clasp. A shiver raced down my spine, entirely unrelated to the cool metal of the necklace.

"There," he whispered, his breath brushing my ear. "Now you're ready for war."

The ballroom of the downtown Chicago luxury hotel was a blinding display of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and high society elites draped in designer labels. As Alexander and I stepped through the grand double doors, the ambient chatter of two hundred wealthy socialites instantly died down.

Every head turned in our direction.

Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass.

“Who is that?” “Is that Alexander Vance?” “With a woman? And... is she holding a baby?”

I felt a wave of panic threaten to pull me under. My knees felt weak. I instinctively reached out, my fingers gripping the sleeve of Alexander's tuxedo jacket for anchor.

He instantly covered my hand with his own, his touch warm and stabilizing. He leaned down, his lips brushing my ear.

"Don't let them smell your fear," he murmured. "Walk with me, Emily."
