Chapter 8 - The UltimatumBy midnight, the gala had transformed from a high-society celebration into a historic corporate purge.

Alexander led me away from the flashing cameras and screaming relatives into a private executive suite overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline. The room was quiet, insulated from the chaos below.

I sank into a plush velvet armchair, my legs suddenly trembling now that the adrenaline was wearing off. Sofi was still fast asleep, completely oblivious to the fact that her mother had just helped overthrow a corporate dynasty.

Alexander poured two glasses of amber whiskey from a crystal decanter, walking over and handing one to me. I didn't drink it, just held the heavy glass, letting the chill cool my fingers.

"You planned all of this," I said quietly, looking up at him. "The flight. The seat next to me. The gala. All of it."

Alexander paused, taking a slow sip of his drink. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city lights before turning back to face me.

"I knew Julian and Beatrice were planning a coup at tonight's gala to oust me as CEO," Alexander confessed, his voice steady and unapologetic. "I needed a catalyst. Someone completely outside their corrupt little world. Someone real."

"So I was just a pawn in your corporate chess game?" My chest tightened with a sudden, sharp ache of betrayal.

"No, Emily," Alexander said instantly, closing the distance between us in two long strides. He knelt down beside my chair, looking up into my eyes with an intensity that took my breath away. "You weren't a pawn. You were the only genuine thing in my life when I was drowning in cynicism."

He reached out, gently taking my hand.

"I bought that airline ticket on that specific flight because I knew your diner shift ended thirty-six hours prior," Alexander admitted softly. "I watched you carry that baby through LAX, fighting tooth and nail against a world that kept trying to knock you down. I didn't plan for you to fall asleep on my shoulder. But when you did... I knew I would do anything in this world to make sure you never had to apologize for your life again."

Tears welled in my eyes, hot and unbidden. Not tears of exhaustion, but of something terrifying and profound.

"I have nothing, Alexander," I whispered. "I'm a diner waitress with a baby and a mountain of debt."

"You have strength, dignity, and a heart of gold," he replied fiercely, pressing my hand against his cheek. "And I have more money than I could spend in a thousand lifetimes, but I've been desperately lonely. Stay with me, Emily. Not as a prop, not as a guest... but as my partner."
