Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE SHADOWS — THE RUNAWAYS OF THE BRIDGE

The wind howled as Ethan’s luxury SUV purred down the slick, icy streets. Lily sat in the passenger seat, staring in disbelief at the heated leather and the digital dashboard. Her hands were wrapped around a warm cup of hot chocolate Ethan had ordered for her.

"How long have you been on your own, Lily?" Ethan asked gently, keeping his eyes on the road.

"Three months," she whispered. "Since the men in black suits came to our apartment. They told us our dad was gone, and they threw all our things in the street. We didn't have anyone else."

Ethan’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. "Where is your father?"

"They said he died in an accident at the big construction site," Lily said, her voice cracking. "But Dad told me before he left that if anything happened to him, it wasn't an accident. He said he found something bad in the blueprints."

Ethan froze. Blueprints. "What did your father do for a living?"

"He was an engineer. His name is Arthur Vance."

Ethan’s heart nearly stopped. Arthur Vance.

Arthur was his father’s chief structural engineer, the brilliant mind who had helped design the massive affordable housing project Ethan was currently working on. Three months ago, Arthur had supposedly resigned and vanished without a trace. The board of directors at Walker Construction had told Ethan that Arthur had taken a lucrative job overseas.

It was a lie. Arthur hadn't left. He had been silenced, and his children had been hunted.

"We're here," Lily said, pointing toward a desolate, frozen overpass.

Underneath the concrete bridge, sheltered from the wind but not the biting cold, was a makeshift camp of discarded boxes and plastic tarps. Shivering inside a giant appliance box was a little boy, no older than five, wrapped in a threadbare blanket.

"Leo!" Lily cried, jumping out of the car before Ethan could even park.

Ethan grabbed the box of warm food and followed her. He watched as Lily threw her arms around her shivering little brother, pulling him close.

"I got food, Leo! A nice man bought us everything!" Lily sobbed, pulling out a warm turkey sandwich.

Leo’s eyes lit up with a primal, desperate hunger. He didn't even chew; he just wolfed the food down, tears of relief streaming down his face. Ethan knelt beside them, holding the box, feeling a profound sense of fury boiling beneath his skin.

"Thank you, mister," Leo mumbled through a mouthful of bread.

Ethan reached out and gently patted the boy's shoulder. As he did, his hand brushed against a small, dirty metal object hanging around Leo's neck. It was a silver cylinder pendant.

"What is this, Leo?" Ethan asked softly.

"Dad gave it to me," Leo squeaked. "He told me to never, ever take it off. He said it’s a magic key."

Ethan examined the cylinder. His eyes widened. It wasn't a toy. It was an encrypted, heavy-duty titanium USB flash drive—the kind used by high-level engineers to secure top-secret proprietary data.

Suddenly, the headlights of a heavy vehicle swept across the dark concrete underpass.

The roar of an engine echoed.

Ethan spun around. A massive black SUV slammed to a halt just twenty feet away. Two men in tactical coats jumped out. One of them pulled a metal baton, while the other reached inside his jacket, revealing the outline of a firearm.

"Step away from the kids, Mr. Walker," the lead man growled. "This doesn't concern you."
