Chapter 10 - The Horizon of ForeverBack in our sunlit craftsman kitchen, the evening breeze carried the sweet scent of jasmine through the open windows.

Francine and David came over for dinner, carrying a massive chocolate cake to celebrate my agency’s first major corporate contract. We sat around the rustic wooden dining table, laughing, sharing stories, and clinking our glasses together in a toast to a future we had carved out with our own hands.
Meadow sat at the head of the table, wearing a brand-new yellow hair bow in her growing golden curls. She was happily eating a massive slice of chocolate cake, her face thoroughly smeared with frosting, completely carefree and radiating the bright, unshakeable confidence of a little girl who knew she was fiercely loved and infinitely protected.
After dinner, while Francine and David were clearing the plates, I walked out onto the back porch with a mug of hot tea.
The sun was sinking below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, gold, and deep rose. The world was quiet, peaceful, and entirely ours.
My phone buzzed on the wooden railing. It wasn't a threatening text from Judith, nor a pathetic plea from Dustin. It was a notification from the federal restitution fund confirming that the first installment of recovered assets had been successfully deposited into Meadow’s college trust account.
I looked down at the notification, then out across the sprawling, green backyard where Barnaby was sleeping peacefully in the tall grass, and finally through the kitchen window at Meadow laughing with her aunt Francine.
They thought they could break us. They thought a pair of clippers and a locked door could reduce my daughter to silence and me to submission.
Instead, they had accidentally handed me the matches to burn down their entire corrupt empire—and in the ashes, we had finally found our true freedom.

I took a slow sip of my tea, smiled up at the evening stars, and whispered into the quiet night:
“We made it.”
