Chapter 6 - Monday Morning ExecutionBy 8:30 AM on Monday, the family court lobby was a circus of flashing camera bulbs, desperate whispers, and aggressive attorneys.

Word had leaked about the federal asset-freeze injunction. Financial blogs and local news outlets had picked up the story: Prominent Corporate Heir and Mother Accused of White-Collar Extortion and Domestic Abuse.
When I walked through the double doors of the courthouse, flanked by Francine, David, and a towering private security guard we had hired for Meadow's protection, the sea of reporters instantly surged forward.
"Mrs. Miller! Is it true your husband hid half a million dollars offshore?" "Did your mother-in-law really shave your daughter's head as a form of discipline?" "Where is Meadow?"
I kept my chin up, keeping Meadow—who was holding my hand tightly, wearing her pink hat and purple elephant—shielded against my side.
As we entered the courtroom, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to our previous appearance. Judge Vance was no longer on the bench; in her place sat Federal District Judge Thomas Sterling, a legendary, no-nonsense jurist known for tearing white-collar criminals and abusive spouses to shreds.
Dustin and Judith were already seated at the defense table.
They looked like they had aged ten years over the weekend. Dustin’s hair was unwashed, his suit rumpled, and his hands trembled uncontrollably as he shuffled a stack of papers. Judith sat beside him like a fallen empress, her face carved from stone, her eyes burning with a murderous hatred every time she glanced in my direction.
Standing behind them was a high-priced corporate defense attorney from the city, sweating profusely as he frantically whispered to Dustin.
"All rise," the bailiff boomed.
Judge Sterling walked in, sat down, and didn't even bother opening a physical file. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany bench, his sharp gray eyes sweeping over the courtroom before landing squarely on Dustin.
"Mr. Miller," Judge Sterling began, his voice booming and authoritative. "Before we discuss custody, I want to address the small matter of the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars you illegally transferred to an unregistered shell corporation using a forged spousal signature."
Dustin’s defense attorney jumped up instantly. "Your Honor, objection! This is a family law proceeding, not a federal criminal arraignment—"
"Sit down, counselor, before I hold you in contempt for wasting my oxygen," Judge Sterling barked, not even glancing at him. "Your client didn't just commit civil fraud; under federal interstate commerce and wire fraud statutes, he initiated an illegal asset-flight maneuver while under an active family court protective order. Federal marshals have already seized the accounts. Every single penny is frozen."
Judith gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. "That’s our money! That’s family capital!"
"That is stolen property, Mrs. Miller," Judge Sterling corrected coldly. "And speaking of you..."
The judge picked up a single sheet of paper.
"...I have here the formal medical report and photographic evidence regarding the assault and battery of eight-year-old Meadow Miller. Coupled with the animal cruelty charges filed by the sheriff's department over the weekend, and the documented extortion attempts via text message..."
Judge Sterling paused, looking directly at Judith.
"...a warrant for your arrest on felony charges of child abuse, harassment, and coercion was issued thirty minutes ago."
The courtroom erupted into instant chaos.
Two armed federal marshals stepped out from the gallery doors, walking purposefully down the aisle toward the defense table.
Judith’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. She lunged backward, knocking her chair over with a loud crash. "You can't arrest me! I am a pillar of this community! You're destroying a dynasty!"
As the marshals grabbed her arms and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, she shrieked at the top of her lungs, locking her wild eyes onto mine.
"SARAH! YOU BITCH! I WILL RUIN YOU FROM BEHIND BARS! YOU WILL NEVER KNOW PEACE!"

The marshals hauled her kicking and screaming out of the courtroom.
Dustin sat frozen in his chair, completely catatonic, staring at his mother’s empty seat as the reality of his utter annihilation finally sank in.
