Chapter 14 - The Masked Savior

The SUV sped through the winding mountain roads at a reckless pace, the tires kicking up sprays of gravel and rainwater. I sat hunched in the middle of the leather back seat, gasping for breath, staring at the two masked figures in the front.

The driver pulled off his black tactical helmet and tossed it onto the passenger seat.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was Elena.

Her hair was cut short, her eyes sharp and focused, completely stripped of the hollow, medicated zombie she had appeared to be in the county precinct holding cell.

"Elena?!" I yelled, grabbing the back of her seat. "What is going on? How are you out of jail? What is this?!"

Elena didn't look back; her eyes remained locked on the winding road ahead. "Lower your voice, David. If we want to stay alive for the next ten minutes, we need to focus."

"Your ex-wife is remarkably resilient when she stops taking the specialized vitamin supplements Julian graciously brewed for her every morning," a smooth, cultured voice spoke from the dark third-row seating behind me.

The interior light clicked on softly. Julian sat there, casually crossing his legs, wearing a crisp dark turtleneck. He wasn't handcuffed. In fact, he looked like a man heading to a high-end corporate boardroom meeting rather than an international fugitive.

I lunged forward, grabbing Julian by the collar of his shirt, my fists clenching with pure murderous rage. "You son of a bitch! You orchestrated all of it!"

Julian didn't flinch. He simply smiled, gently pushing my hands away with surprising strength. "Control your adrenaline, David. It clouds the strategy. If I wanted you dead, you’d still be drowning in that asylum cage."

"Why?" I screamed, my voice cracking. "Why go through all of this?! The bodies in the pool, the framing, the hit-and-run files—what do you want?!"

Julian leaned back, resting his arm along the leather seat. "I wanted a clean slate, David. And more importantly, I wanted absolute control over the multi-million-dollar trust fund your late grandfather left to Maya. But to access it legally without triggering federal audits, both you and Elena had to be legally discredited, imprisoned, or declared dead."

Elena glanced in the rearview mirror, her face expressionless. "He used me, David. He used my past mistake from three years ago to turn my life into a living hell. But the moment he tried to use Maya as collateral... that’s where the script changed."
