Chapter 15 - The Unlikely Alliance

"You planned this together?" I stared between Elena and Julian in absolute disbelief.

"Not together, David. Never together," Julian corrected smoothly, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket and tossing it onto my lap. "Elena and I had an... understanding. She pretended to be broken down by my psychological conditioning. I pretended to trust her completely. But while I was busy running my little theater at the Blackwood Sanatorium, she was quietly copying my master decryption keys and rerouting the federal wire transfers."

I picked up the silver drive, my hands shaking. "What is this?"

"This is the master key to every offshore account, every hidden surveillance server, and every forged document Julian used to frame us both," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "With this, we can clear our names, expose the corrupt federal marshals on Julian’s payroll, and get our daughter back before morning."

"And Julian?" I asked, eyeing the man sitting quietly in the back. "What happens to him?"

Julian chuckled softly, a low, melodic sound. "I retire to a quiet beach in the Mediterranean under a brand-new identity, David. That was the bargain Elena and I struck. She gets her daughter and her freedom; I get my capital and my exit. Simple business."

"You think I'm just going to let you walk away after everything you've done?" I snarled.

"You don't have a choice," Julian replied, his voice suddenly turning ice-cold, his eyes locking onto mine with terrifying intensity. "If you try to hand me over to the authorities, the secondary automated protocol releases the full unedited footage of your hit-and-run directly to federal custody, guaranteeing you spend the rest of your natural life behind bars while Maya grows up in the foster system. The choice is yours: justice, or your family."

The silence in the SUV grew heavy, thick with the smell of ozone and wet pine. Outside, the first faint light of dawn began to bleed over the horizon, painting the sky in pale, bruised shades of purple and gray.
