Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

The wail of police sirens cut through the quiet suburban afternoon, growing louder by the second as two cruiser cars pulled up in front of Mrs. Harris’s house, followed swiftly by an unmarked detective vehicle.

I rushed out to meet them, my shirt stained with blood, holding Maya tightly by the hand. "In the backyard next door! My daughter was locked in a cage, and there are bodies in the swimming pool!"

Lead Detective Vance, a weary-looking man with sharp gray eyes, took one look at my torn arm and Maya’s terrified expression, and immediately motioned for backup. "Secure the perimeter. Check the rear pool area. Let's move!"

Four officers vaulted over the fence into Julian’s yard. Within seconds, a frantic shout came over the radio: “We’ve got multiple bags in the pool. Suspect is attempting to exit through the front.”

I watched through Mrs. Harris’s front window as Julian was slammed against the hood of a police cruiser. He didn't fight back. In fact, as the cuffs clicked around his wrists, he turned his head directly toward the window where I stood, and his lips formed a single, chilling word: Check.

Ten minutes later, Detective Vance walked inside the living room, looking grave. He wasn't looking at me with the sympathy I expected; instead, his eyes were narrowed with deep suspicion.

"Mr. Miller, we found the cage. We found the bodies in the pool," Vance said slowly, resting his hand on his holster. "And we found your ex-wife, Elena, upstairs in the master bedroom, conscious, with your fingerprint-laden hunting knife resting on her bedside table and a signed confession letter blaming herself for the murders."

My heart stopped. "What? No! Julian framed her! He admitted it to me outside!"

"Mr. Miller, Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Mrs. Miller—insists she acted alone out of jealousy and psychological distress," Vance interrupted coldly, holding up a clear evidence bag containing a handwritten note. "And her handwriting matches every single word on this paper."

Maya let out a piercing shriek, burying her face in my jacket. "Mommy didn't do it! Uncle Julian made her write it! He gave her the blue pills every night!"

Detective Vance looked down at Maya, his expression softening slightly, but the professional mask returned instantly. "We have to take Mrs. Miller into custody, Mr. Miller. And CPS is going to need to take temporary custody of Maya while we sort this out."

"No! You can't take her away from me!" I yelled, stepping in front of Maya.

As the reality of the situation crashed down around me, I realized Julian’s true genius. The bodies weren't just hidden to cover up a murder—they were bait. And we had walked right into the center of his web.
