Chapter 4 - The Midnight MeetingLiam couldn't wait. That night, he drove back to the diner, waiting in the shadows of the alleyway until closing time.

When Sophie walked out, pulling her coat tight against the cold, she didn't head for the subway. She walked toward a high-end apartment building near the park—a place she shouldn't have been able to afford on a waitress’s salary.

Liam followed her. He watched her enter the lobby, watched her interact with the doorman like she belonged there. He didn't follow her inside. He waited.

Suddenly, a black SUV pulled up to the curb. A man stepped out—a man Liam recognized instantly. It was Dr. Aris Thorne, the lead surgeon who had overseen Amelia’s ‘final’ days in the hospital.

Liam’s blood turned to ice.

He watched from behind a brick pillar as Thorne handed Sophie a thick envelope. They stood close, their voices hushed.

“You’re playing a dangerous game, Amelia,” Thorne said.

The name hit Liam like a physical blow. He pulled out his phone and hit record.

“It’s Sophie,” the waitress replied, her voice losing its warm ‘waitress’ tone and becoming sharp, clinical. “And I’m doing exactly what you paid me to do. Keep the husband away, keep the child confused, and collect the payout.”

Liam leaned out, his eyes wide. She was acting. The waitress was a plant. And Dr. Thorne was behind it.
