Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PASTThe ink on the corporate dissolution papers was barely dry, but the shockwaves were already reshaping the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Callahan Meridian’s collapse wasn't just a local scandal; it was a corporate earthquake. Hundreds of subsidiaries, shell companies, and fraudulent LLCs that Michael Callahan had used to siphon funds were being unmasked by federal investigators. But while the media feasted on corporate corruption, a darker, quieter drama was unfolding behind closed doors in a high-security holding facility outside Boston.

Vanessa Sterling sat in a stark, windowless interrogation room.

Her designer clothes were gone, replaced scratchy orange detention garb. Her hair, once meticulously styled by personal stylists, was pulled back into a messy, unwashed knot. She stared blankly at the stainless-steel table, her fingernails digging into her palms until the skin turned white.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

A tall man in an immaculate charcoal suit stepped inside. He didn't look like a cop or a federal agent. He walked with the heavy, unhurried stride of old money—the kind of wealth that didn't need to post on Instagram to prove it existed.

It was Richard Sterling. Vanessa’s father.

Vanessa’s head snapped up, a desperate, pathetic glimmer of hope sparking in her bloodshot eyes.

"Dad!" she choked out, scrambling out of her metal chair and rushing toward him. "Dad, you came! You fixed it, right? You hired the lawyers? Tell me we’re getting out of here!"

Richard didn't move. He didn't open his arms. He didn't even blink.

He simply raised his hand and slapped Vanessa across the face with a dry, cracking impact that echoed off the concrete walls.

Vanessa stumbled back, gasping, clutching her stinging cheek as tears welled in her eyes. "Dad... why did you do that?"

"Because you destroyed us," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any paternal warmth.

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a thick manila folder, and dropped it onto the stainless-steel table.

"Do you know what happened this morning, Vanessa? The Northstar Trust didn't just audit Callahan Meridian. They audited our family's manufacturing plants. Every safety violation we bribed inspectors to ignore, every falsified export certificate, every penny of tax evasion—it’s all on the table."

Vanessa shook her head frantically. "No... no, we have lawyers! We have political connections!"

"We had connections," Richard snarled, his voice finally breaking into a venomous hiss. "The moment you ripped that girl's blouse off in front of the live cameras, you signed our death warrant. You didn't just attack a volunteer, Vanessa. You attacked Eleanor Hart—the woman whose husband holds the exclusive patent on every neural-surgical tech system used in Northstar’s medical empire."

Richard leaned in close, his eyes burning with pure hatred.

"Our accounts are frozen. Our assets are seized. Our family name is mud from New York to London. I spent thirty years building the Sterling enterprise, and you burned it to the ground because you couldn't control your pathetic, shallow jealousy."

Vanessa sank slowly to her knees, her legs giving out entirely. "I didn't know... nobody told me she was important..."

May you like

"That's your entire problem, Vanessa," Richard spat, turning his back on her and walking toward the door. "You only measure a person's worth by what they can do for you. Well, now you'll spend the next ten years figuring out what it feels like to be completely worthless."

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, leaving Vanessa alone in the dark, screaming into the empty concrete box as her entire world dissolved into ash.
