Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECT OF EMPIRESBack at the Hart estate, the morning sun poured through the massive glass skylights of Jonathan’s private study.

The room smelled of old leather, aged bourbon, and fresh coffee. Maps of global medical infrastructure projects covered a massive digital drafting table in the center of the room.
Jonathan stood by the window, watching the harbor through binoculars, while Ellie sat at a sleek walnut desk, reviewing a stack of restructuring proposals for the newly acquired Harbor Grand Hotel properties.
"Your father visited Vanessa this morning," Jonathan said without turning around.
Ellie didn't look up from her tablet. "I know. My security detail keeps me updated."
Jonathan turned, walking over to pour two cups of dark roast coffee. He handed one to Ellie, leaning his hip against the edge of the desk.
"Are you satisfied?" he asked softly, searching her eyes. "The Sterling empire is gone. Callahan Meridian is liquidated. Every person who participated in that public humiliation has lost their livelihood."
Ellie took a slow sip of her coffee, her gaze steady and unwavering.
"Satisfied isn't the right word, Jon," she said, setting the mug down. "Justice isn't about revenge. It's about clearing out the rot so that something better can grow in its place."
She tapped her tablet screen, sliding it across the desk toward him.
Jonathan glanced down at the display. It was a comprehensive blueprint for the Hartwell-Morgan Foundation’s New England Initiative—a massive, multi-billion-dollar endowment dedicated to funding vocational training, free healthcare clinics, and fair-wage guarantees for hotel and service workers across the entire eastern seaboard.
Jonathan let out a low whistle, a grin spreading across his face. "You planned this before the gala even started, didn't you?"
Ellie looked up, a mischievous, brilliant smile touching her lips.
"I told you, Jon. I went undercover because Denise tipped me off about wage theft at the hotel. I wanted to see how deep the corruption went. Vanessa just... accelerated the timeline."
Jonathan laughed, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead. "Remind me never to play poker with you, my love. You're terrifying when you're methodical."
Before Ellie could retort, the secure intercom on the wall chimed.
"Sir, Mrs. Hart," the head of security announced, his voice tense. "You have an unscheduled visitor at the main gates. It’s... it’s Sarah Jenkins, the former CFO of Callahan Meridian. She says she has information regarding a final hidden asset that Michael Callahan tried to keep off the books."

Ellie and Jonathan exchanged a sharp, knowing glance.
"Send her in," Ellie said smoothly. "Let's see what else our dear departed CEO tried to hide."
