Chapter 8 - THE HIDDEN LEDGERThe conservatory was bathed in the soft, golden light of early afternoon.

Sarah Jenkins stood near the center of the glass-domed room, holding a heavy, encrypted flash drive in her hand. Her posture was professional, but there was a distinct edge of nervous tension in her eyes. She had betrayed her boss, dismantled a multi-billion-dollar corporation, and now she was standing face-to-face with the most powerful tech billionaire in America and his reclusive, brilliant wife.

Jonathan and Ellie walked in side by side. They didn't look like an intimidating corporate duo; they moved with the effortless coordination of partners who had conquered empires together.

Sarah immediately straightened and dipped her head respectfully. "Mr. Hart. Mrs. Hart. Thank you for seeing me on such short notice."

"Cut to the chase, Sarah," Jonathan said smoothly, his hands resting in his pockets. "You didn't come here to exchange pleasantries. What’s on the drive?"

Sarah stepped forward and placed the encrypted flash drive on the glass table between them.

"Before Michael Callahan was stripped of his title, he knew the board was turning on him," Sarah explained, her voice steady. "He spent the last forty-eight hours trying to siphon fifty million dollars in liquid capital into an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands—money earmarked for the employee pension fund."

Ellie’s eyes narrowed. A cold, dangerous calm settled over her features.

"He stole from his own workers' retirement funds," Ellie said quietly.

"Yes, ma'as," Sarah nodded. "He thought he could slip it past the external auditors while everyone was distracted by the public scandal. But I tracked the routing numbers. The transfer is scheduled to execute at midnight tonight unless the account is formally frozen by an authorized majority shareholder."

Jonathan looked down at the flash drive, then looked over at his wife. A silent communication passed between them—years of trust, strategy, and shared vision compressed into a single glance.

"Can you trace the destination bank, Sarah?" Ellie asked.

"Already done," Sarah replied, tapping her own briefcase and pulling out a printed transaction map. "It leads directly to a private Swiss holding account registered under an alias—one that Michael plans to use when he flees the country."

Jonathan let out a short, cold chuckle. "Flees the country? With what passport? His assets have been seized by federal marshals."

"He has a secondary diplomatic passport through a shell partnership in Panama," Sarah revealed. "He’s planning on catching a private charter out of a private airfield in Vermont at 2:00 AM tonight."

Ellie stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of her emerald skirt. She looked out the glass windows toward the horizon, where storm clouds were beginning to gather over the Boston harbor.

"Not if we get there first," Ellie said.

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "Are you suggesting a field trip, my love?"

Ellie turned back to him, a sharp, exhilarating smile on her face. "Let's go show Mr. Callahan what happens when you steal from the people who keep the world running."
