Chapter 13 - The Poisoned ChaliceThe grand ballroom was suffocatingly hot, filled with the elite of international finance, politics, and organized crime, all circling one another like sharks in a tank.

Claire sat at a VIP table near the base of the stage while the three boys were safely sequestered in a private green room backstage with two of Gabriel’s most trusted personal guards, playing video games on a tablet.
Gabriel stood a few feet away, talking quietly to Dante about perimeter security, when a waiter in a crisp white tuxedo approached Claire with a silver tray holding a flute of crystal champagne.
“Compliments of Mr. Sterling, madam,” the waiter said smoothly, bowing slightly before walking away.
Claire stared at the glass. She didn't drink alcohol, and Arthur Sterling was the last man on earth whose hospitality she would trust.
Before she could push the tray away, a sleek, manicured hand reached out, grabbed the glass, and poured its contents deliberately onto the marble floor.
Claire looked up, startled.
Serena Vale stood beside her, wearing a plunging crimson designer dress that screamed for attention. The famous fashion model looked thinner, her eyes harder, carrying a bitter, spiteful edge.
“You really are naive, aren't you, Claire?” Serena sneered quietly, leaning down so only Claire could hear. “Sterling doesn't send champagne to celebrate. He sends messages. That glass wasn't poisoned to kill you—it was laced with a fast-acting paralytic. Just enough to make you collapse on this ballroom floor in front of five hundred people, humiliating Gabriel and proving he can’t protect you.”
Claire’s breath hitched. “Serena... why are you telling me this?”
Serena’s jaw tightened, venom dripping from her words. “Because Gabriel threw me away like trash for you and your bastards. If I can't have his empire, I can at least watch it burn from the inside.”

Before Claire could reply, Serena turned sharply on her stiletto heels and vanished into the swirling crowd of socialites.
Claire stood up abruptly, her heart pounding against her ribs, and rushed toward Gabriel.
