Chapter 3 - The Enemy Within

The revelation hit Richard like a physical blow. He stared from the old photograph to the young girl standing before him. Now that he looked closely, he could see it—the same sharp, intelligent eyes, the same stubborn tilt of the chin. Maya was the daughter of Elena, the only woman he had ever truly respected, the genius who had vanished without a trace.
"Elena's daughter..." Richard murmured, the cold corporate mask completely melting away. "She never told me she had a child. Why didn't she come to me? Why didn't you come to me sooner?"
"Because she couldn't trust anyone, Richard," Maya said, dropping the formal 'Mr. Hoffman' for the first time. "After she discovered that Hoffman International's technology was being covertly modified for military espionage by someone inside your board, she was targeted. She went into hiding to protect me. She taught me everything she knew—every language, every cryptographic code, every legal strategy. She died six months ago from an illness, but before she passed, she gave me a mission: save Hoffman International from the parasite eating it from the inside."
Before Richard could speak, a sharp piercing alarm blared from his desktop console. A red warning light flashed on his security monitor.
"Warning: Unauthorized access to Sector 4 Archive Vault," an automated voice announced.
Richard lunged for the monitor, activating the live security camera feed. The screen flickered to life, showing the subterranean vault where the company's master contracts and digital hard drives were kept.
Standing in front of the open safe was a man in a tailored, expensive suit. It was Marcus Sterling, the Chief Financial Officer of Hoffman International, a man Richard had trusted with his finances for over a decade. Marcus was frantically jamming a specialized EMP device into the mainframe, while stuffing original paper records into a shredder bag.
"Marcus..." Richard growled, his face twisting with absolute fury. "That bastard. He's deleting the digital trail of the Chinese contract!"
"He's not just deleting the contract," Maya said, running up to the monitor, her eyes scanning the lines of code flashing on the side of the screen. "Look at the data transfer bar at the bottom. He’s downloading your entire global financial ledger. He's going to frame you for the three-million-dollar loss and the illegal technology transfer, then flee the country on a private flight!"
"Not on my watch," Richard snarled. He grabbed his coat and unhitched a concealed security override card from his desk drawer. "Maya, stay here. It's too dangerous."
"No," Maya said, her voice commanding and fierce, completely defying her age. "The mainframe is locked with a 128-bit linguistic cipher that changes every sixty seconds based on ancient Latin and Mandarin roots. Your security team won't be able to bypass the door if he locks it from the inside. You need me to crack the code, or he walks away clean."
Richard looked at the twelve-year-old girl. In any other circumstance, it would be insane to bring a child into a corporate ambush. But Maya wasn't just a child; she was a weapon.
"Fine," Richard said. "Keep up with me."
They bolted out of the office, bypassing the elevators, which were compromised by the power outage, and took the private emergency stairs, descending rapidly into the bowels of the skyscraper.
Down in the concrete halls of Sector 4, the air was cold and smelled of ozone. As they approached the heavy steel vault doors, they heard a loud CLANG. Marcus Sterling had noticed the security breach on his end and engaged the emergency lockdown. The massive three-ton steel doors sealed shut with a pneumatic hiss.
Through the small, bulletproof glass window of the vault door, Marcus looked out. When he saw Richard, he panicked for a second, but then his face settled into a smug, arrogant grin. He held up a black flash drive containing the downloaded ledger.
"Too late, Richard!" Marcus shouted through the intercom speaker. "In exactly three minutes, the data wipe will be complete, and the police will receive an anonymous tip with irrefutable proof that you orchestrated the fraudulent Chinese contract. By the time they sort through the mess, I'll be in a country with no extradition treaty!"
Richard slammed his fist against the steel door. "Open this door, Marcus! I built this company from nothing! You won't destroy it!"
"Watch me," Marcus laughed. He turned back to the mainframe.
"The cipher panel is active," Maya whispered, pulling Richard away from the window. She pointed to a glowing digital keypad on the wall that displayed a rapidly changing sequence of strange, ancient characters. "He initiated a linguistic lockdown. If we enter the wrong sequence, the mainframe explodes its thermite charges, destroying all evidence permanently. We only have one shot."
The timer on the door read: 1 minute, 15 seconds.
Maya closed her eyes for a split second, her brilliant mind processing the shifting matrix of symbols. Her fingers hovered over the keypad like a master pianist.
"Come on, kid," Richard sweated, looking at the countdown. 45 seconds. "What is it?"
"It’s a double-layered riddle in old Aramaic mixed with financial ledger codes from the 14th century," Maya muttered, her fingers suddenly blurring as she began typing a sequence at lightning speed.
