Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Counter-Attack

"05... 04... 03..." The electronic voice of the countdown echoed through the concrete hallway, chilling them to the bone.

Richard closed his eyes, bracing for the blast, instinctively throwing his large frame over Maya to shield her from the impending thermite explosion.

But with two seconds left on the clock, Maya didn't panic. She realized the trap. "It's an inverted confirmation bias!" she yelled, her hand reaching around Richard's arm to smash the clear button, followed by a completely different sequence: 0-0-0-0.

The countdown stopped at 01.

For a terrifying second, nothing happened. Then, the heavy pneumatic seals hissed, and the massive three-ton steel door slowly swung open.

Maya looked up at Richard with a sharp smirk. "Marcus is arrogant. He used the standard corporate overwrite protocol hidden underneath the complex cipher as a safety net for himself."

Richard didn't waste a breath. He charged into the vault like a wounded lion. Marcus Sterling spun around, his face morphing from smug triumph to absolute horror as Richard grabbed him by the collar of his expensive suit and slammed him against the mainframe console. The black flash drive flew out of Marcus's hand, skittering across the floor.

"It’s over, Marcus," Richard growled, his voice vibrating with pure rage. "You're done."

"You think you've won?" Marcus choked out, gasping for air, but a sinister smile crept back onto his face. "Look at the main monitor, Richard. The data transmission to the authorities is already at ninety-nine percent. You can't stop the upload. The moment it hits one hundred, the federal government freezes every asset Hoffman International owns. You're ruined anyway!"

Richard looked at the screen in horror. The progress bar hit 99%. He reached for the cables, ready to rip them out, but Maya shouted, "Don't touch it! If you pull the plug now, it automatically triggers a hard-drive wipe and sends an automatic corruption alert to the feds, which makes you look even guiltier!"

"Then what do we do?!" Richard yelled, feeling completely helpless against a digital clock.

Maya sprinted to the secondary terminal. Her small fingers flew across the keyboard, entering a string of command lines that looked like complete gibberish to Richard.

"I'm not stopping the upload," Maya said, her eyes reflecting the green glow of the monitor. "I'm rerouting the destination IP address. Marcus didn't realize that my mother left a backdoor protocol in this very system code ten years ago—a protocol named Project Phoenix."

The progress bar hit 100%. UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Marcus burst into a loud, maniacal laugh. "Yes! You're finished, Richard! Enjoy prison!"

"Check the confirmation receipt, Marcus," Maya said calmly, stepping away from the keyboard and crossing her arms.

Marcus’s laughter died instantly. He looked at the screen. Instead of a confirmation from the federal fraud division, a massive, official seal of the International Interpol Financial Crime Unit appeared on the screen, followed by a message: Data received. Warrant issued for the immediate arrest of Marcus Sterling and the Directors of the Dragon Syndicate.

"What?!" Marcus gasped, his knees going weak. "No... no, that's impossible!"

"I didn't send your fabricated files to the local police," Maya explained with a cold, piercing glare. "I attached the real transaction history—the one showing your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands receiving payments from the syndicate—and sent it directly to global federal agencies. You didn't frame Richard. You just signed your own confession."

Within seconds, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the hallway. It wasn't Richard's security team. It was federal agents, guns raised, rushing into the vault. They bypassed Richard and immediately slammed Marcus onto the ground, ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Marcus was dragged out, screaming curses at the top of his lungs, the lead agent walked up to Richard.

"Mr. Hoffman," the agent said, tipping his hat. "We've been tracking this syndicate for three years, but we could never get past their encryption. We received an anonymous tip from an encrypted source that gave us full access today. You're clear. But who engineered this network bypass?"

Richard looked down at Maya. The twelve-year-old gave him a subtle, warning shake of her head. She wanted to remain in the shadows.

"It was an automated security upgrade," Richard lied smoothly, protecting her. "Designed by a former partner."

The agent nodded, satisfied, and left to secure the building.

The vault grew quiet again. Richard turned to Maya, feeling a profound sense of awe and humility. A twelve-year-old girl had just saved his multi-billion-dollar empire, cleared his name, and avenged her mother in the span of two hours.

"You did it, Maya," Richard said softly. "Your mother would be incredibly proud. You saved the company."

May you like

"Not yet," Maya said, her face suddenly turning grave. She pointed to the remaining data on the screen that was decrypting from Marcus’s personal files. "Look at this, Richard. Marcus was just a puppet. The real mastermind behind my mother's disappearance and the betrayal of this company... is someone you currently live with."
