Chapter 5 - The Snake in the House

The ride in Richard's armored limousine was dead silent. The city lights blurred past the tinted windows as the vehicle sped toward the exclusive, heavily guarded gated community where Richard’s private estate lay.
Richard stared blankly ahead, his mind reeling from the encrypted file Maya had pulled from Marcus’s drive. The file contained private bank wires, scheduled surveillance logs of his own house, and a final authorization signature for the Chinese contract fraud.
The signature belonged to Victor Hoffman—Richard's younger half-brother, a man Richard had supported, housed, and given a luxurious life to, despite Victor’s apparent lack of business talent. It turned out Victor wasn't untalented; he was just channeling his intellect into a bitter, deep-seated jealousy.
"Are you ready for this?" Maya asked quietly from the seat across from him. She looked small against the expensive leather interior, but her presence was commanding.
"I gave him everything," Richard said, his voice tight with betrayal, his jaw clenched so hard it ached. "When our father died, I took care of him. I gave him an allowance, a home, a status. And he used it to sell my company to a foreign syndicate and target your mother?"
"Victor didn't just want money, Richard," Maya said, looking out the window. "He wanted to be you. He hated being in your shadow. My mother discovered ten years ago that Victor was leaking prototype communications tech to foreign competitors. When she confronted him, he had her kidnapped and forced her to work in an underground think-tank in Eastern Europe to develop encryption codes for his buyers. She escaped only a year ago, broken and sick."
Richard’s fist slammed into the armrest. "He will pay for every single day she suffered."
The limousine tore through the iron gates of the Hoffman mansion and screeched to a halt in the grand driveway. Richard bounded out of the car, his rage boiling over. Maya followed closely behind, her thin folder tucked under her arm.
Richard threw open the massive double doors of the mansion. The grand foyer was quiet, illuminated by crystal chandeliers. Sitting in a plush armchair by the roaring fireplace, sipping a glass of expensive scotch, was Victor Hoffman. He looked relaxed, a smug smile on his face, clearly expecting a phone call from Marcus confirming Richard's ruin.
"Ah, Richard!" Victor said, rising from his chair with fake warmth. "You're home early. I heard there was some... excitement at the headquarters today. A security lockdown? I hope everything is alright with the Chinese contract."
Richard walked up to his brother, his eyes burning with an intensity that made Victor freeze mid-stride. Without a word, Richard threw the decrypted file printouts onto the coffee table.
Victor looked down. His eyes scanned the bank details, his signature, the direct communication logs with the Dragon Syndicate. The color drained from his face instantly. The scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the marble floor.
"Richard... I... this is a frame-up," Victor stammered, backing away. "Marcus must have forged this! You know Marcus can't be trusted!"
"Save it, Victor," Richard said, his voice dangerously low. "Marcus is currently in federal custody. He gave up your encryption keys in exchange for a plea deal. You're done."
Victor’s panicked expression suddenly shifted. The fake innocence vanished, replaced by a twisted, bitter sneer. He stopped backing away and straightened his jacket.
"So what if it's true?" Victor hissed, his voice filled with years of pent-up malice. "You always thought you were better than me, Richard! The great Richard Hoffman! Our father left everything to you because he thought I was weak. But I fooled you all. I built a network right under your nose. And you can't touch me."
"The police are already on their way, Victor," Richard said coldly.
"Are they?" Victor laughed darkly. He pulled a small, black detonator device from his pocket. "Did you really think I didn't have a backup plan? The security grid of this mansion is entirely under my control. The moment I press this button, the gas lines in the basement rupture, and this entire estate becomes a burial ground. But I'll make you a deal. You let me walk out of here, give me access to the offshore account keys, and I won't blow us all to hell."
Richard stepped forward, but Victor raised his thumb over the button. "Don't move, big brother! I have nothing left to lose!"
In the high-stakes standoff, neither man noticed Maya stepping forward. She looked at Victor with total disdain.
"You haven't changed at all, Victor," Maya said softly.
Victor blinked, noticing the twelve-year-old girl for the first time. "Who the hell is this brat? Richard, you're bringing kids to a negotiation now?"
"Look at me, Victor," Maya commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "Look at my eyes. Does the name Dr. Elena Vance mean anything to you?"
Victor gasped, his eyes widening as he recognized the striking resemblance. "Elena? No... she's dead! She died in hiding!"
"She died," Maya said, stepping closer, completely ignoring the detonator in his hand. "But she left me her mind. And her access codes."
Maya pulled a small, modified smartphone from her pocket. A line of blue code was running across it.

"While you were busy bragging to your brother," Maya said with a sharp, brilliant smile, "I tapped into your mansion's local network via the smart-grid hub in the driveway. I didn't just bypass your security; I permanently fried the receiver on that detonator exactly forty-five seconds ago. Press it. See what happens."
