Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Bloodline

The private wing of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was locked down under maximum security. Four armed guards stood at the entrance to Room 402.
Inside, Dr. Aris Thorne handed Alexander a medical tablet. His expression was grim.
"Severe malnutrition, localized skin inflammation from chemical exposure to industrial floor cleaners, micro-fractures in her left wrist, and signs of prolonged sleep deprivation," Dr. Thorne reported quietly. "Alexander... if she had stayed in that house another week, her organs would have begun to fail."
Alexander sat by the bedside, holding Lily’s tiny hand. She was hooked up to an IV drip, fast asleep, clutching the white teddy bear. Every muscle in Alexander's body was tense, vibrating with an overwhelming urge to tear down the world piece by piece.
"Where is Victoria?" Alexander asked without looking up.
"In holding at the central precinct," Marcus, his security chief, answered from the corner of the room. "Her father, Senator Cole, is already throwing his weight around. The precinct captain is under immense pressure to release her without charges, citing a 'family misunderstanding'."
"Family misunderstanding..." Alexander repeated, a dark smile touching his lips. "Has the Senator forgotten who funded his last three campaign cycles?"
"Apparently so, sir. But there's something else." Marcus stepped forward, dropping a thick black folder onto the table. "While you were at the hospital, our forensic IT team swept the mansion’s server rooms. Victoria didn't just starve Lily out of cruelty. She was looking for something."
Alexander turned his head, his eyes narrowing. "Looking for what?"
"Your late wife’s physical safe inside the study," Marcus said. "The one built behind the portrait of Evelyn."
Evelyn, Alexander’s first wife and Lily’s mother, had died two years ago in a mysterious car crash. Her death was ruled an accident—a brake failure during a rainstorm. It was that grief that had left Alexander vulnerable, allowing Victoria Cole to slip into his life under the guise of a comforting socialite who promised to give Lily a mother's care.
"Victoria was trying to crack the safe," Marcus continued. "We found high-grade hardware bypass tools plugged into the security panel. And boss... she wasn't acting alone."
Alexander opened the folder. Inside were security camera stills from three nights ago. They showed Victoria in the study, talking to a tall man whose face was shrouded in the dark. But on his right hand, a distinct tattoo was visible: a serpent coiled around a silver dagger.
Alexander’s blood ran cold.
"The Syndicate," Alexander whispered. "The same mark found on the driver of the truck that hit Evelyn’s car."
It was never an accident.
Suddenly, Lily stirred in the bed. Her small eyes fluttered open, wide with panic. "Daddy! Don't let her take the key!"
Alexander immediately rushed to her side, gathering her in his arms. "Shh, Lily. You're safe. Nobody is taking anything."

"The lady... she kept hurting me because I wouldn't tell her where Mommy put the key," Lily sobbed, her fingers digging into Alexander's jacket. "Mommy told me to keep it inside Mr. Fluffy!"
Alexander froze. He looked down at the soaked white teddy bear resting on the nightstand.
