Chapter 4 - The Lion’s Den

Alexander didn't flinch. In the dark, his survival instincts—honed during his early years in naval intelligence before building his empire—instinctively took over.

He pulled the hospital bed lever, dropping the heavy frame onto the lead assassin's foot while simultaneously throwing his body over Lily.

PFT! PFT!

Suppressed shots shattered the glass windows. Marcus fired back, his shots finding their targets in the dark. The room turned into a chaotic battleground of muzzle flashes and shattered glass.

"Marcus, take Lily through the service elevator!" Alexander roared, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole and swinging it with lethal force into the second attacker’s jaw. The man went down with a crunch.

Alexander grabbed the attacker's weapon, flipped the safety off, and put two rounds into the chest of the remaining gunman entering through the door.

"We go together, sir!" Marcus yelled, scooping Lily—wrapped tightly in a blanket—into his arms.

"They aren't here for me! They're here for the drive!" Alexander shouted. He stuffed the silver flash drive into his pocket, took the brass key, and tossed it to Marcus. "Take her to the safehouse in Sector 9. If I'm not there by sunrise, burn the city down."

"Daddy, NO!" Lily screamed as Marcus pulled her into the dark maintenance corridor. "Don't leave me again!"

"I'm right behind you, baby!" Alexander yelled back.

As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind Marcus and Lily, Alexander turned back toward the main hallway. More footsteps were approaching. At least ten men, fully armed, moving with military precision.

This wasn't just a street gang or hired thugs. This was a private military company.

Standing in the middle of the hallway, illuminated by the flashing red emergency lights, stood a familiar figure. He wore an expensive gray suit, completely out of place amidst the tactical team.

It was Senator Harrison Cole—Victoria’s father.

"Alexander," the Senator said calmly, stepping over the fallen guards. "You should have kept your mouth shut. You should have let Victoria discipline the child. Now look at the mess you've forced me to make."
