Chapter 4 - The Syndicate's ShadowsBy Monday morning, the peaceful facade of the Lake Geneva estate had transformed into an impenetrable fortress.

Four sleek black SUVs lined the circular gravel driveway, disgorging a dozen heavily armed elite bodyguards clad in tailored suits and tactical gear. My second-in-command, a scarred, ruthless veteran named Viktor, stood at the front doors waiting for my orders.

Inside the nursery—which I had spent the entire night personally remodeling from a dusty guest room into a warm, vibrant haven for the girls—Ivy and Skye were sound asleep in the twin beds I had pushed together.

I stood by the window, watching the sunrise paint the lake in shades of gold and crimson, sipping black coffee while reviewing a digital tablet loaded with encrypted intelligence reports.

The door creaked open softly.

Viktor stepped inside, moving with the silent grace of a seasoned predator. He kept his voice low so as not to wake the children.

"Boss," Viktor murmured. "The perimeter is secured. Motion sensors, thermal cameras, and sniper nests are active on all quadrants. Nobody gets within a mile of this house without us knowing."

"Good," I replied without taking my eyes off the lake. "What about the Chicago factions? Have they caught wind of the girls?"

Viktor hesitated, a grim shadow crossing his scarred face. "Word travels fast in the underworld, Vance. The Morrellis heard a rumor that Margaret Whitmore was seen storming out of your estate in a fury over two children. They're asking questions. Tony Morrelli is sniffing around, trying to figure out if you have a new weak spot."

A cold, mirless smile touched the corners of my mouth. "Let Tony look. If he thinks my daughters are a weak spot, he's about to learn the hard way that they're the trigger for a nuclear weapon."

"Understood," Viktor nodded respectfully. "What about Child Protective Services? They're scheduled to arrive at noon for the preliminary welfare check you requested before all this chaos unfolded."

I paused. Right. In the middle of discovering my wife was alive, my mother's betrayal, and inheriting two toddlers, I had completely forgotten about the state bureaucracy.

"Cancel it," I said casually.

Viktor blinked. "Cancel a state CPS visit? Boss, they have a legal mandate. If we wave them off without a valid reason, they'll bring local law enforcement with a warrant."

"Then let them bring the police," I turned around, setting my coffee cup down on the dresser. "Or better yet, buy off the director of the county bureau. I don't care how much it costs. My daughters are not going into the foster system, and they are not undergoing state interrogation. Bring the paperwork here, and I'll sign whatever shell corporation adoption waivers are necessary to make them legally mine under seal."

Viktor grinned, a fierce display of loyalty. "Consider it done, Boss. I'll have our corporate lawyers rewrite the genealogy records by noon. By tomorrow, Ivy and Skye Whitmore will officially be recognized as your biological children born abroad."

"And find out where Helen is," I added, my voice sharpening.

Viktor tilted his head. "Helen?"

"The nurse who helped Claire escape the psychiatric facility a year ago," I explained, stepping closer to Viktor. "If anyone knows where Claire is right now—whether she's hiding, running, or captured—it's Helen. Find her before my mother's cleaners do."

Before Viktor could reply, a soft rustling sound came from the beds behind us.

I whipped around instantly, my hand dropping to my shoulder holster out of pure instinct, before catching myself.

Skye was sitting up, rubbing her sleepy eyes with the back of her small hands. Ivy woke up a second later, instantly reaching under her pillow to check that the silver keepsake box was still there.

When Ivy saw me standing by the window, her tense shoulders relaxed.

"Good morning, princesses," I said, my voice softening immediately as I walked over to the beds, abandoning my mafia persona entirely.

Ivy clutched the silver box to her chest. "Are we going to hide again?"

"No hiding," I knelt beside them, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "You are safe here. Forever. Now, who wants pancakes with so much syrup it'll make your teeth hurt?"

Skye’s eyes lit up with sleepy excitement, and for the first time, a bright, giggling smile broke across her face.

Viktor watched the scene from the doorway, clearing his throat awkwardly as he witnessed the most feared crime boss in the country playing short-order chef for two toddlers.

"I'll handle the lawyers and Helen, Boss," Viktor muttered, turning on his heel. "Good luck with the pancakes."
