Chapter 9 - The Final ReckoningInside the grand foyer of Margaret's estate, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of burning documents and panic.

Margaret’s private security detail, seeing that the battle was utterly lost and that their bosses had been thoroughly outmaneuvered, slowly lowered their weapons and raised their hands, stepping aside as Viktor's men swarmed the mansion.
I walked into my father's old executive study, the very room where Claire had discovered the truth five years ago.
Margaret and Ethan were pushed inside by two of my enforcers, forced down onto their knees on the Persian rug.
"Viktor," I said calmly, not even looking back as I walked over to the mahogany desk. "Secure the hard drives from the safe. Every financial record, every offshore account, every piece of blackmail material they have on the Chicago Commission. I want it all uploaded to federal and syndicate databases simultaneously."
"Right away, Boss," Viktor replied, setting to work immediately with a team of tech specialists.
Margaret glared up at me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think destroying our empire makes you safe, Vance? You think you've won? Claire is gone! Even if you tear down everything we built, you'll never see your precious wife again!"
"Are you sure about that, Mother?"
A sharp, clear voice echoed from the doorway of the study.
The entire room went dead silent.
Even Viktor stopped typing.
I spun around so fast my coat whipped through the air.
Standing in the doorway, supported by two of my elite guards, was a woman dressed in a dark trench coat, pale, exhausted, with dark circles under her eyes, but carrying an unmistakable, fierce grace that could belong to only one person in the universe.
Claire.
My breath caught in my throat. My heart slammed against my ribs with the force of a battering ram.
"Claire..." I breathed, my voice cracking for the first time in my life.
Claire raised her head, locking her emerald-green eyes onto mine. A soft, tearful smile broke across her face.
"Hello, Vance," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I told you I'd come back home."
Margaret turned her head, staring at Claire as if she were looking at a literal ghost rising from the grave. "No... that's impossible! We verified the crash! We watched the car burn!"
"You watched an empty car go off a cliff, Margaret," a deep, authoritative voice spoke from behind Claire.
A tall, rugged man stepped out of the shadows of the hallway—an FBI federal prosecutor whom I had secretly bribed and partnered with six months ago to hunt down corruption within the upper echelons of the syndicate.
"Meet the federal task force that helped Claire fake her death to stay one step ahead of your hit squads," the prosecutor announced, flashing a federal badge at Margaret. "We've been building a RICO case against Margaret and Ethan Whitmore for five years. Tonight, the warrants are fully executed."
Ethan buried his face in his hands, howling in despair as federal agents swarmed the study, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto both him and Margaret.
I didn't care about the federal agents. I didn't care about the handcuffs, the empire, or the syndicate.
I crossed the room in two massive strides, closing the distance between us, and swept Claire up into my arms, burying my face in her neck as tears finally spilled freely from my eyes.
"You're alive," I choked out, holding her so tightly I was afraid she would evaporate like smoke. "You're actually alive."
"I'm here, Vance," Claire whispered, holding me just as fiercely, burying her face against my chest. "I'm so sorry I had to leave you. But I had to protect our girls."
May you like
"They're safe," I whispered back, kissing the top of her head. "They're back at the Lake Geneva estate, coloring dragons and waiting for their mommy."
Claire pulled back slightly, looking up into my eyes, her own tears shining in the light. "Let's go home, Vance. Our real family is finally together."
