Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Whitmore EstateBy Friday night, the sprawling lakeside estate of Margaret Whitmore—the ancestral seat of power where I grew up—looked less like a home and more like a besieged medieval fortress.

My convoy of six armored black SUVs tore through the iron front gates, smashing them off their hinges with a deafening screech of twisted metal. Viktor and twenty of my most elite enforcers poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in seconds.

I stepped out of the lead vehicle, adjusting my leather gloves, my face carved from stone.

The front doors of the grand mansion flew open, and Margaret stepped out onto the porch, flanked by a dozen private guards holding submachine guns. Ethan stood behind her, sweating profusely, holding a silver-plated revolver with a hand that shook so violently he could barely keep it steady.

"Vance! Have you lost your absolute mind?!" Margaret shrieked, her voice echoing across the manicured lawn. "Attacking your own mother's home? Have you turned on your own blood?!"

I walked slowly up the stone steps, ignoring the dozen barrels pointed directly at my chest. Viktor and my men raised their rifles in unison, locking a deadly crossfire onto Margaret's guards.

"You stopped being my mother the day you poisoned my father and faked my wife's death," I said, my voice cutting through the night air like a butcher's knife.

Margaret’s face paled instantly. She glanced nervously at Ethan, whose knees buckled slightly at my words.

"You... you don't know what you're talking about," Ethan stammered, raising his shaky gun. "Vance, stay back or I swear to God I'll shoot!"

"Go ahead, Ethan," I stopped ten feet away from them, opening my coat slightly to reveal my empty holster, daring him. "Shoot me. Let's see if you have the stomach for patricide like Mother."

Ethan whimpered, his finger trembling on the trigger, unable to pull it.

Margaret stepped in front of Ethan, her haughty demeanor returning out of sheer desperation. "You think you've won, Vance? You think you can destroy this family and walk away? The Commission has already voted! Without our backing, your syndicates will tear you apart from the inside out by morning!"

"The Commission?" I let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Marcus Morrelli tried to deliver that exact same threat on Wednesday night. Do you know where Marcus is right now, Mother?"

Margaret frowned. "What are you talking about?"

I snapped my fingers. Viktor stepped forward from the convoy, dragging a bound and gagged figure across the gravel driveway, tossing him at the foot of the porch steps.

It was Marcus Morrelli, battered, bruised, and weeping through a bloody gag.

Margaret and Ethan stared down in absolute horror.

"I didn't wait for Friday night," I said smoothly, stepping up onto the porch, towering over my mother. "I dismantled the Morrelli syndicate in thirty-six hours. Tony Morrelli is currently tied to a chair in an undisclosed basement in Chicago, singing like a canary about every politician, judge, and corrupt cop on your payroll, Mother."

Margaret’s breath hitched. For the first time in her life, the unbreakable matriarch realized she had lost completely.

"And as for you, Ethan," I turned my piercing gaze toward my younger brother. "You embezzled ten million dollars from the family pension fund to fund your pathetic lifestyle. I have the bank records, the digital audit trails, and the confession recorded on my phone."

May you like

Ethan dropped his revolver, letting it clatter uselessly against the wooden porch boards, falling to his knees and weeping openly. "Vance, please... I'm your brother! Don't do this!"

"You aren't my brother," I whispered, stepping right past them and kicking the heavy oak doors wide open. "You're a thief and a murderer. And your trial starts right now."
