Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe silence in the grand lobby of Harbor Grace Medical Center was absolute, save for the hum of the sleek HVAC system and the nervous rustle of a clipboard in Hannah Pierce’s trembling hands.

Sheikh Omar Al-Rashid stood at six feet tall, draped in a tailored obsidian thawb beneath a cashmere coat. His silver-threaded bisht shimmered under the crystal chandelier, but his piercing dark eyes ignored the opulent architecture of the foyer. They were fixed entirely on the empty space where Grant Hart stood, frozen mid-stride.
"Your Excellency," Grant recovered with a practiced, dazzling smile, extending a hand that trembled ever so slightly. "Welcome back to Harbor Grace. We were not expecting you until Thursday, but our VIP wing is entirely at your disposal. I am Dr. Grant Hart—"
Sheikh Omar bypassed Grant’s extended hand completely. He didn't even look at the man whose face plastered every billboard from Magnificent Mile to O’Hare.
"I did not ask for a tour guide, Doctor," Sheikh Omar said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that carried across the marble floors. "I asked where Mara is. My family’s philanthropic foundation has transferred forty million dollars into this institution this quarter, and every single cent is tied to a binding clause: Mara Hart must countersign the allocation. Where is she?"
Arthur Pendelton, the senior chairman of the hospital board, hurried out from the executive elevators, his face the color of spoiled milk.
"Sheikh Omar! What an unexpected honor—"
"Quiet, Arthur," the Sheikh snapped, his gaze scanning the pale, sweating faces of the board members who had gathered like sheep sensing a wolf. "I have tried her private line twelve times since landing at O’Hare. Her assistant says she is out. Your chief of surgery tells me nothing. Do you take me for a fool? A hospital run by ghosts does not receive my family's wealth."
Grant forced a laugh, though his collar felt three sizes too small. "Mara is... taking a brief personal leave, Sheikh Omar. As the medical director, I oversee all clinical and administrative operations—"
"You oversee the scalpels, Doctor. Nothing more," Sheikh Omar interrupted flatly. He turned to Hannah. "Miss Pierce. You have worked directly outside Mara Hart’s office for five years. Where is she?"
Hannah swallowed hard, glancing at Grant before looking down at her polished shoes. "She... she cleaned out her desk on Friday evening, sir. She took her father’s wooden box. She hasn't answered her phone."
Across the lobby, near the coffee kiosk, Chelsea Reeves watched the scene unfold in her crisp navy scrubs. Her blonde hair was tied back in a professional knot, but her fingers dug into a paper cup so hard it began to buckle. She’s just the quiet wife, Chelsea told herself fiercely. Grant is the star. This is a tantrum. She’ll be back.
Sheikh Omar’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He pulled a gold-plated fountain pen from his breast pocket and tapped it against his palm.
"Cancel the pediatric wing expansion," the Sheikh commanded, loud enough for every nurse, resident, and patient within fifty yards to hear. "Freeze all capital transfers. If Mara Hart is not sitting across from my legal team by noon tomorrow, Harbor Grace is no longer a recipient of the Al-Rashid Endowment. Good day, gentlemen."
As the billionaire turned on his heel and walked back toward his waiting Maybach, the lobby erupted into a panicked whisper.
Grant turned on Hannah, his veneer of charm shattering into jagged pieces. "What did you say to him? Why didn't you cover for me?"
Hannah looked up, her eyes flashing with a sudden, long-suppressed fury. "Cover for you, Dr. Hart? I’m an administrative assistant, not a miracle worker. And for the record... Mara always remembered my mother’s chemotherapy treatments. You didn't even know I had a mother."
She unpinned her ID badge, dropped it onto her desk, and walked out.
Grant stood alone in the center of the lobby, surrounded by whispering staff and hostile board members. But upstairs, in the administrative archives, a digital notification pinged on a neglected terminal.
