Chapter 6 - Ashes of the CrownThe emergency press conference was scheduled for 4:00 PM in the hospital’s main auditorium.

By 3:45 PM, the room was packed to capacity. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune, local TV affiliates, and national medical journals crowded the aisles, their cameras clicking furiously as the flashbulbs strobed against the dark wood paneling.

Rumors had leaked like a sieve: a billionaire donor walking out, a federal health audit, a botched surgery in OR 4, and a secret wife stepping out of the shadows to reclaim an empire.

When the side door opened, Mara walked out alone.

She didn't wear black, as if mourning a dead marriage. Instead, she wore a sharp, cream-colored blazer and trousers, looking every inch the corporate sovereign.

She stepped up to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly into the lenses of a dozen cameras.

"Good afternoon," Mara began, her voice steady, resonant, and carrying an absolute command of the room. "Effective today, Dr. Grant Hart has been relieved of all surgical and administrative duties at Harbor Grace Medical Center, pending a comprehensive federal and internal audit."

A storm of shouting questions erupted instantly.

“Mrs. Hart! Is it true he was suspended due to medical malpractice?”

“Does this mean the Al-Rashid endowment is permanently canceled?”

“Are you filing for divorce?”

Mara raised a single hand, and the room fell instantly silent.

"Harbor Grace was founded thirty-five years ago by my father, Dr. Julian Vance, on a simple premise: that medicine is a sanctuary, not a stage," she said, her eyes sweeping across the audience. "For the past twelve years, I have worked quietly behind the scenes to keep that sanctuary alive. Today, we are returning to our core values."

She paused, letting the weight of her words settle over the crowd.

"Furthermore, in light of recent revelations regarding administrative misconduct and conflicts of interest, I am personally restructuring the hospital board. Effective immediately, all executive bonuses are frozen, and every financial contract executed since 2023 will undergo forensic review."

At the back of the auditorium, standing in the shadows near the exit, Grant watched her.

He looked smaller somehow, stripped of his white coat, his posture broken. Chelsea stood beside him, her face stained with tears of humiliation, realizing too late that she had hitched her wagon to a falling star.

"Mara!" Grant cried out, pushing his way half-heartedly down the center aisle before two security guards crossed their arms and blocked his path. "You can't do this! I am the face of this hospital! Without me, you have nothing!"

Mara looked down from the stage, her gaze locking onto him for one final, pitying second.

"Grant," she said into the microphone, her voice echoing softly across the silent auditorium. "You were never the heart of Harbor Grace. You were just a parasite."

She turned, stepped away from the podium, and walked out through the back exit, leaving the flashbulbs to illuminate the ruins of his stolen kingdom.
